I'm betting it's nowhere near as bad you think (though I can certainly relate to cringing while reading my own early stuff). My first attempt at fanfic, before I even knew that was a thing, was a Planet Of The Apes story with the series characters. I shrewdly (hah) wrote Galen for myself and gave the parts of astronauts Pete and Alan to the 2 boys (Randy and Chris) I had a crush on, so we could act it out on the playground at recess. Good times!
