Numbers

Although it seems like the only writing I've been doing lately is from prompts, the stuff that's already out there has been getting attention. I came home last night to a review of Knowledge is Power (http://vanillafluffy.livejournal.com/245126.html), last year's porntastic entry for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summerlove. And all three of my Batfics* (posted at the Pit of Voles) have raised their numbers markedly since The Dark Knight was released. Interestingly, Surreptitious has had the most hits---and the summary makes it clear that that's more a Jim Gordon story than a Bruce/Batman tale. And Flying Towards Destiny...with the new Mummy film coming out, I'm not surprised that it's seeing traffic...I just wish I didn't feel so guilty about it---because I don't know if I'll EVER finish it. *sigh* It's 3rd most popular in terms of hits....

FF.net has a new feature that's messing with my head---it shows Reader Traffic---it does a breakdown of WHERE the readers are from, by country. (I knew who the hit from Estonia was!) Holy wow, so far this month, I've had hits from 28 countries outside the US. The English-speaking ones like Canada, Australia and the UK---okay, why not. But I'm astonished to see visitors from places like Malaysia, Chile and the Republic of Korea.

I'm pretending to myself that I'm an international best-selling author (even if there isn't any money in it, it gives me a much-needed sense of accomplishment).

That is really cool to find out you have an international readership.

I imagine we will be seeing the Mummy movie -- the guys because it's MUMMIES! and me because I'll be avidly watching the lovely John Hannah. :)

Ditto the Hannah!lust, and Brendan's no slouch either.

Way cool!

I just got another request for on of my fics to be translated into Chinese. Gotta head over to FFN and see what my International stats are.

Whoa, I've never been asked about translation---that's really cool.

Someone did first few Hugh & Bobby stories in Italian and then someone started doing my H/W in Chinese. I can't imagine what that's like.

??? I can think of one of two people who *could* translate me into other languages, but not sure what I'd do if they did....

Oh, really? ::goes to check it out::

[identity profile] teresa-c.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. So far this month, my greatest readership has come from Germany. Srsly? The second largest is from Brazil. ::is intrigued::

[identity profile] vanillafluffy.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Far out! My number 1 is the US, rounding out the top five are Canada, Philipines, Australia and the UK. (Germany is #6.) If I had more patience, I'd comb through it and find out which countries read what---but with 110 stories and ficlets posted, it AIN'T gonna happen!

Btw, early birthday greetings, in case the Swiss* cheese I have in my cranium isn't operating on the day!

* Switzerland is ignoring me so far....

Makes me wonder if I should bite the bullet and start posting fics there, as well. Especially since the LJ fandom seems much more reticent about leaving comments (case in point: I crossposted at three fics to [livejournal.com profile] sn_crossovers...and got ONE new comment from that comm., in total). *sighs*

I was at ff.net for a couple of years before I got onto LJ and made a couple very good friends there (through a fairly small fandom). I won't say that members are any better about commenting, but ff.net DOES give you an impressive table of stats that tallies things like hits per story and per chapter, number of times someone has saved your story to favorites, and you can flag authors or stories for email notifications when they post something new. (I remember when all we had to go on was reviews---the hit counter is made of awesome!) I'm fascinated sometimes by what's popular. *I* may adore a particular story that languishes little-read, but something I coughed up like a hairball gets hits like wow.

I'd say they're both good venues for different reasons. FF.net for keeping track of numbers and LJ for keeping track of friends. That's why I love the notification system---take a couple days/weeks off from your f'list and you can miss a lot, but those FF notifications will land in your mailbox, regardless.

Hope I'll see you there! (I'm Vanillafluffy there, too. I'm hard to miss.)

LOL. Ironic, no? There's no accounting for taste, as they say.

I doubt I'll have time to do it this vacay either way, alas. Maybe at Xmas break....damn you condo-related tasks, DAMN YOU! :S
