Well, that should make things interesting

It looks like Tropical Storm Emily is going to be rolling through this weekend.

It's not for sure yet, but the prediction cone gives it a good chance.

She's just a little storm, at this point, and as long as it doesn't stall out and flood us, no big deal.

Non-Floridians freak out about tropical storms and hurricanes...I had an aunt you used to call in hysterics any time there was any "major" weather. OMG, there's a Hurricane Watch for the coast!---er, yeah. Two hundred miles south of me, thanks, Tante.

Live through a few of them, though, and you start to get blase---"I'm not going anywhere for less than a Cat 2!"---and that's only if you live on a barrier island or in a trailer, and maybe not even then.

I told my husband that after years of boarding up and "riding it out," from now on, if it looks menacing, I am boarding a plane to NY and stay with my daughter. We can come back and assess the damage afterwards. No more living without A/C for weeks at a time. Getting too old for that crap. I have homeowner's insurance and am not afraid to use it!

One thing I've made darn sure of is to keep my homeowner's insurance current! (And secretly, although I'd miss my Stuff, the idea of getting a fistful of cash and being able to Start Over is intoxicating.)

Be careful what you wish for- insurance companies can be ruthless SOB's, especially after a disaster. The fistful of cash that you expect turns into a lot less- unless your records are exemplary , they will pay you for very little. We've been through it when we lost some buildings on our property. Not to mention the fact that by the time they get around to you, you've been homeless for weeks or months.

I've got coverage for replacemnt of house plus contents, and I made sure that it reflected market value as of a couple years ago. And I've got a decent relationship with my local rep. So we'll see---IF it ever becomes necessary.
