My sanity check bounced

I've barely slept in the last few days, thanks to those damned neighbors and their damned dogs. I love dogs, y'all know I do, but seriously, I want to grab this bunch and tear their throats out. Anything to shut them up. Ditto the kids running around with their kazoos all afternoon, the football game that was going on---it used to be such a nice, quiet neighborhood! Finally settled down around 8:30---the silence WAS deafening---and of course, then I had insomnia and coundn't fall asleep til 4...and the dogs started in again around 8...HATE THEM.

On the other hand, I was all wrought-up and got a helluva lot done yesterday. One load of laundry, which doesn't sound like much, but while I had that in the works, I worked in the garage and made decent progress. I found the hose for my shop-vac, yay! (Only vac I have, but all I have are area rugs.) Winnowed a fair amount of stuff from out there, then went into my bedroom closet and really started pitching things. Faded, stretched out, snagged, too big, too short---bagged for departure. Moving things from the garage to my closet,, well, that's still in progress---but there IS progress.

What is a reasonable amount of clothing, gals? Summer is 2/3rds of the year, here, but things like pants and skirts can be worn year round. Have a 2-1 ratio of short-sleeved or sleeveless tops? How many? How many pairs of pants, skirts, long or short-sleeved dresses? Jackets? I have a ridiculous number of jackets, considering how brief our winters are, but they vary in length, fit, pattern, etc. Really, what's "reasonable"?

Thursday evening at Mb's, we went to WalMart in Titusville and wandered around getting necessaries like caffeine for me and cat food for her. She talked me out of a pair of black pants I was eyeing--But look! They're on sale!---and she was right, of course. Saw a great floor/reading lamp on sale for $10, which I really do need for the black hole that is my bedroom, but it's still out of my price range, and their return-of-layaway policy doesn't help a bit. *sigh*

Their Christmas stuff is being set up, and Mb is trying to decide what her decor is going to be this year. I don't have that problem; my pink tree is still up from last year, although I never actually got it decorated. This year, I think I'm going to be doing a lot of baking as gifts---it's about the only thing I can do.

I'm sorry I missed your birthday, [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal---I hope you had a great day, I hope you have a wonderful year, and that all is well in the city by the bay. I'd bake you a cake, but I don't think it would ship well.

I didn't make it to [livejournal.com profile] ang5fam's garage sale, either---no money and too much crap of my own---but the weather was excellent and hopefully the bargainistas came out in droves and spent lots.

Spent6 three hours last night picking apart a pillow for at least the second time, trying to restore it to a firmness that wasn't quite as hard as cork.

Uh...I know there's more I wanted to say. That's the problem with not being able to post as the spirit moves me, things escape my brain and don't return until I'm away from the keyboard. Perverse little things, thoughts.

The weather is, as I mentioned, gorgeous. Sunny, crisp---and I've been able to sleep with a comforter and no fan, which is divine. I'm rediscovering the delight of 3/4 length sleeves or a jacket in the morning over shorter sleeves, because it tends to warm up by the afternoon. After the juicyness that is Florida summer, I'm loving our version of autumn.

TTFN.

Yesterday was a super day- both financially and weather-wise. Sara Ann dropped by and left with a few treasures. Today was much slower but I got clutter cleaned out which was the main goal. It's very hard work and the older I get, the harder it is. Folks showed up before daylight but as long as they were looking to spend,no problem!
I am now officially pooped out and going to take a shower, pop a frozen pizza into the oven and call it a week-end!!!
A yard sale is a bit of a freak show- sort of like the People of Wal-Mart in your own front yard! ha ha

[identity profile] vanillafluffy.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad it worked out, there's nothing more aggrevating than busting your butt trying to set up a sale, then netting all of $4.

I know that I may be touching a sore point, as you have still the front yard issue to solve, but cannot you both phone the lady to come and inspect plus put in a complaint about the damn dogs? I am sure they cannot do much about children but isn“t there a time-frame about the quiet time for a night? I know that there are here at least about construction sites...

Code Enforcement is different from Animal Control...I should call them, I just really hate to antagonize the owners. I know first-hand what it's like to be the one complained about, and it don't make for neighborly feeling!

Sure, it does not, but neither do the dogs WHO JUST DO NOT SHUT UP.

In my opinion, you only have too many clothes if you're not wearing them. As long as they're getting worn - even if it's once a year - I say go for it. *grin*

[identity profile] vanillafluffy.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I *do* need to thin the herd; it's ridiculous how much room my clothes occupy. I tend to want something for every contingency and mood...really goes overboard at times.

I just culled my closet of worn-out things from last winter that I was too tired to ditch in the spring. Right now I have:

*3 dresses -- two are nice-casual and one is for dressy occasions.
*4 skirts
*4 cardigan sweaters (three of which are rarely worn)
*2 dressy jackets
*3 pairs of jeans
*1 pair of shorts
*8 pairs of dress slacks (two of these I rarely wear and they can be culled)
*A lot of tops: About two weeks worth each of short- and long-sleeved shirts and pull-over sweaters.
*2 swimsuits
*2 bathrobes -- one for winter and one for warmer months -- and one swim cover-up
*5 total pajama sets and nighties to cover all seasons
*9 pairs of shoes, three of which are sandals, and one pair of winter boots
*2 autumn/spring weight jackets and two winter coats. One of the coats is getting worn out and I wear it to do yard work mostly.

This has me covered for everything from weddings to work to funerals. The weather here ranges from below zero in January to above 100 at mid-summer. It's not an adventuresome wardrobe, since I practically wear a uniform to work and all my shoes are black, brown, or taupe. But I do have a few fun handbags, including one that's bright red, to liven things up.

OMG, you are ORGANISED! (I meant that in a good way!)
I am not sure I could get by that number of things (especially in the winter/rough weather department, as ours is 2/3rds of the year the lousy skiing wearther - rainy, chilly and damn uncomfortable - but it IS a good set-up to focus on. THANK you!

We've always lived in small houses, so I kind of had organization thrust upon me. :) It also helps that most fashion trends don't suit me -- I look better in neat, classic styles.

Years ago I read a little book titled "Simplify Your Life" by Elaine St. James. It was way ahead of the minimalist trend going on now -- it does not address digital clutter because home computers were somewhat unusual then -- but it was a real inspiration to me.

That's a decent guideline---although I confess I snickered in disbelief at the idea of ONLY nine pairs of shoes. I'm a shoe whore, I admit it, although they come from Payless, not Prada. I'd probably lean toward more skirts and fewer pants. Either way, I have a LOT of pruning to do.

I'd be a shoe whore if it weren't for having a Morton's neuroma in my left foot. Instead I have to search high and low for nice shoes that won't make me limp.

I have so many slacks because of work. I rarely wear a skirt or dress to the office, although I will tomorrow because there's a funeral going on during office hours.

Don't worry sweetie! I've been terrible with birthday's this year. I had a nice quite birthday. Hubby and I went to dinner at Maverick, where I had a dessert called "Figs on a Plate." (I'm not sure if the name was meant to evoke "Snakes on a Plane" or not.)

[identity profile] vanillafluffy.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Was it served by someone dressed as an extra from "Pam-Am".

No, although our waitress was fairly heavily tattooed on both arms. This is the actual menu description: Olive oil cake/yogurt sorbet/pistachio praline/rose hip honey
