The Wedding, karaoke, hats

And...they're married. Very pretty location, literally ON the beach, almost sunset, arch at the water's edge...*sigh* I don't want to get married (I don't think; unless he's a really amazing guy), but I'd *love* a wedding....
Okay, deep breath, trying to be coherent---B looked gorgeous. Not so much the dress (Ho-hum, it's a white wedding dress**) as the shiny sparklies she had in her hair, which went so nicely with the spectacular diamond necklace and earrings A gave her as a wedding present. (The necklace I made for her? I ended up keeping it and wearing it, although I wish like hell I'd known in advance; I would've left it the original length instead of shortening it.) B's hair is fairly short---3-4", I think, and she had it curled and lots of little rhinestone ornaments in it. Quite fetching.
Poor A picked up a bug from visiting relatives and was sick as a dog. D, who officiated, stressed the "in sickness and in health" bit---and A had to repeat his "I do!" for the benefit of anyone more than a couple feet away. I told D that if I ever end up having a special day of my own, I'm going to ask him to take part in the ceremony. (Which will be even more ecclectic, since the other dignitaries I'd want are Wiccan and Buddhist, respectively.)
There was a lot of DIY involved in the wedding decor---for instance, the groom is in the metal fabrication industry, and made the arch---which should last for a hundred years---this is NOT some flimsy piece of hollow tubing. He also made a matching three-tier cake stand. (Good food in general and the cake in particular was teh yummy.) Lots of seashells scattered around as part of the tablescapes, nothing extravagant, but all pretty and tasteful. A's mom assembled the bouquets and floral centerpieces (silk).
I got to catch up with a few people I haven't seen in a while...was relieved that the people from my old job whom I least wanted to see weren't there, any of them. Ended up at the same table as my ex- and his wife, which wasn't too dire (always bearing in mind that I don't have to go home with him, thank You, deity/deities of your choice). His wife invited me for dinner, for at least the second time, and I may go one of these days just out of morbid curiousity.
I think the timing was unfortunate---it being the tail-end of the holiday weekend, most folks started drifting out shortly after dinner. There was a DJ out on the back deck, though, and a few of us hung out til the end.
karaokegal, I am no longer a virgin! After listening to the ex's wife warble her way through "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad", I was motivated to get up and belt out "I've Got Friends in Low Places"...which was emphatically NOT the version I'm used to, but I managed. And wife of ex joined in on my second effort (the DJ dude had more than one mike, and she grabbed one) and we did "Bad Moon Rising", which is enough of a classic that it's just about bomb-proof, I think. Of course, by that point in the evening, there were barely a dozen people left, most of whom I've known for ages, so it didn't exactly cause stage fright.
For the record, I had on the black and teal print I posted a pic of the other day. I didn't have time to do anything about the length, but it was a warmish afternoon (at least *I* thought so), and I had black shoes and suitable jewelry to accessorize with, so after much dithering over the last few days, that was what I went with. And it really does fit divinely. (I'll try to get a pic---there were cameras all over the place; I'm sure someone got a digital snap.)
I decided that this afternoon; until the last minute, I was going back and forth between my dark green jacquard pants set (I didn't want to wear pants), my black velvet skirt and jacket with silver top (too warm for velvet), and the new dress, which, aside from the length, is comfortable AND flattering.
Yesterday, when I stopped off to get hair color on the way to work, I visited a store in Rockledge that bills itself as bridal accessories and formals, and when I walked in there, I almost died of bliss---it's Hat Heaven. Seriously, both sides of the store were lined with display heads wearing hats in every shape and color. I was smitten. These aren't cheap little wear-it-for-a-season-and-toss-it hats---the cheapest price tag I saw was $90, but OMG, hats.... I'm resolved to go back there one of these days when I don't have to be to work at a certain time, and play with the hats.
The proprietor was a lovely African-American woman, who said she could make me a deal AND she'll do layaway. *whimpers with hat lust* Proving the old axiom about the size of the world, when I told her I was going to a beach wedding, she knew exactly whose wedding I was talking about---it turned out that A had been to the menswear shop next door the day before to buy a suit, and she'd chatted with him about the wedding details. I'll be able to tell her all about it when I go back---I will *definitely* be going back.
========
** I lean toward an off-white shade for one thing. I have the wrong coloring for stark white. Two, I like a little bling, but I cannot imagine myself in a cream-puff dress with poufy sleeves and five thousand sequined flowers. Ugh! I want a simple white underdress, and a dramatic lace duster to go over it. I wouldn't say no to a little exotic rickrack on the duster, but I lean more toward paisley than florals. I have a picture I clipped from a catalog years ago, of the concept outfit. (Not exactly it, but the closest I've ever seen.) I also have a vintage ivory pillbox hat that would be drop-dead with the ensemble I'm envisioning.
Now if I can just locate my groom (and he doesn't object to my plans)---!
