vanillafluffy: (do I look happy?)
When it comes to fan-fic, I'm a lot more lenient than...well, I'm fairly mellow. Usually, if it's bad!fic, I'll quietly hit the back button and go on my merry way. I don't write MSTs because, there for the grace of God, etc. I try to operate under the dictum my mother taught me, namely, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all---so you won't catch me flaming anyone, regardless of whether or not I think something is total shite.

One thing that particularly annoys me is massive OOC-ness. (There's so much OOC-ness of one variety or another written in the House fandom that I won't even *try* to catalog it all.) Of course, everyone has their own interpretation of the characters, their own self-held truths...it just so happens---and drives me crazy---that one of the most commonly written perceptions deviates from mine by about 180 degrees.

Rowan Chase is/was not a villain.

And yes, I know it's absurd that I'm defending a character who only appeared in one episode and will never appear in any others unless David Shore writes a flashback, which seems unlikely.

And yes, I tend to prefer happy endings and had a satisfactory relationship with my own dad, so I don't have a predisposition toward bad!daddy plots.

And yes, my indignation is also underpined by the fact that I like Patrick Bauchau and don't want to disparage him/his character.

Evil!Rowan is not supported by canon. I've watched "Cursed" at least six times, and there's no sign of Rowan being an asshole. He doesn't get in Chase's face, doesn't try to backstab him with House---all in all, he plays it in a very low-key way so that Chase is the one who's edgy. Chase does accuse his dad of emotional neglect and abandonment, which is a far cry from the heinousness so many writers try to pin on him...I suppose I ought to chalk it up to an involuntary AU.

I wrote my take on the Rowan/Robert dynamic in Underlying Causes, and I realize that's just my interpretation and doesn't automatically make me right (Even if I AM SO RIGHT.). I've got my own blindspots, I'll be the first to admit that, and sometimes bad!daddy makes for a better story.

But God, it's hard to read a steady diet of it.

(Written because http://lizhowhp.livejournal.com/7530.html#cutid1 was too much insanity at 8 AM. Not badly written, but evil!Rowan set me off. Does 'fluffy have to smack a bitch?)
