What am I getting myself into?

I've joined thingsunwritten, which is an original fiction exchange. It's been so long since I've attempted anything but fanfic that I feel the need to reassure myself that my brain hadn't completely atrophied. I mean, I know I can create OCs, but a whole mileau to go with them? Wow. THAT'S a challenge.

Assessing my strengths, I can write sci-fi/space opera, action with car chases and gunfights and clinical medical---which aren't the paths most traveled---and I can do tongue-in-cheek fluff and occasionally outright crack. I *can* do porn, but I tend not to unless it's part of an actual plot. When it comes to ratings, I do maybe one XXX-rated story every six months, with a few mild R's in between. (And the X's are more likely to be for kink than smut.) With a little prompting, though, who knows what I could come up with?

I have no idea what I'm going to request, either. I think I'll rummage through my pictures folder and see if anything strikes me as story-worthy. Post a picture with a suggestion: Dystopia. 1918. Ghost story. Pictures are good, since there are so many things it doesn't tell you. Where is it, who took the picture? Is it day or night? What time of year is it? What's the weather like? Sometimes pictures convey these things, but they can't impart certain ephemeral details---the smell of cooking or perfume, the music from a band or radio, whether the subject has suffered a great loss, or just a headache. And that's where the story comes in.

I'd love to see some of my sister writers sign up, since at this point there's been very little response and the more the merrier. It's a thousand word minimum, you can do that in your sleep, can't you?
