Meme redux
Jul. 5th, 2009 08:15 am Regarding the WORDS meme,
karaokegal gave me: cars, bars, scars, stars, home.
Cars A life-long passion. I can tell you about the cars my dad had when I was growing up, cars our neighbors had, about how, when our landlady's nephew got a brand-new GTO when I was five and I was the first person he took for a ride in it. (Nephew traded it for a 1970 Chevelle SS, which is one of the reasons Bobby's car gives me cargasms.) I've ridden and/or sat in a variety of interesting cars over the years, including a Jaguar XKE 12-cylinder, an MG and a DeLorean. I went to trade school to learn automotive machining back in the early '80s, but the program closed down before I graduated. I never worked in the field, but I still have fantasies---constantly!---of acquiring mistreated rides and restoring then to their well-deserved glory. And thanks again to whoever gifted me with the car that I made into this icon. Our pharmacist used to have an ancient Porsche 911 that I lusted after....
Bars Meh, not so much these days. When I was a kid, my dad occasionally took me bar-hopping with him and I had Shirley Temples and got those little plastic mermaids and monkeys that they hung on the glasses. When I got older, the drinking age was still 18, which I took advantage of, but didn't get into the bar scene until after my dad died---and that was only to go see bands. Aside from bars attached to restaurants, I'd be hard-pressed to tell you the last time I went to a bar that was just a bar. Well over 10 years.
Scars The first thing that came to mind was a quote from The Replacements: "Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.". The second thing that came to mind was that little scar JDM has on his right cheek:

(Which kind of supports the first thing). And then, I could discourse on how there are many kinds of scars we all bear that are invisible, but painful nonetheless....
Stars Are we talking acting or astronomy/astrology? I know the most about the former---I've been crushing on thespians since I was four or so and fell in love with Vincent Price. I know a little about astronomy---I've been to a few planetarium shows here and there. (Nothing is more awesome, IMO, than a good laser show on acid.) And I've picked up a few things about astrology, although I can't cast a chart. (I'm a Virgo with several planets in Virgo. It's an Earth sign ruled by Mercury. If I was any more grounded, I'd be a rock, but goddamn, I can dither with the best of them.)
Home Is that place, where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in. Home is where the heart is. A man's home is his castle. Home is the sailor, home from the sea, and the hunter is home from the hill. East, west---home's best. Do we really want me to go on? There's no place like home. And after a week and a half occupying other folks' homes, I'm glad to be back in my own, however temporarily. It's a mess, but it's MY mess---which agrees with the words of the immortal George Carlin: Home is a place to keep your stuff.
And now, I'm off to Kat's for a shower, because home is currently lacking in that amenity.
