I see it's been about two weeks since I last posted...I've been busy writing, even if I'm not posting constantly. Mostly Trixie-verse since TMWTSA is done, although also a one-shot Venom AU (https://archiveofourown.org/works/17489549, on the off-chance you're interested) where Venom is Eddie's dog. I know Tom Hardy is crazy about dogs--two minutes on Pintrest will prove it, he's accompanied by a dog in approximately every third photo--but Eddie Brock is in way over his head with this one.
My DVD player turned itself off the other day, and is unresponsive. I've tried the remote, checked the battery, tried to do it manually--my last option is to unplug it and plug it in again, which is going to require massive amounts of furniture moving. It's on my to do list.
I've been fairly active, surprise, surprise. Remember I mentioned going bowling with GK a couple weeks ago? I rolled a 27, which, while cringe-worthy, is NOT the worst game I've ever had. Heck, I was pleased that I made it through a game without falling over dead, which would've been the case a few months ago. GK told SS about this debacle, and SS offered to buy me a bowling lesson as a gift. That made me wince, but I accepted, because I *do* enjoy bowling, even when it goes dreadfully.
To, the lesson was last Friday--one hour with a gal named B, 40-ish, encouraging and very helpful. I rolled a few frames to give her an idea of what my problems were. One, starting too far back. Two, trying to "help" the ball when I let go of it. Let the swing do the work, she said, and just release the ball.( It's that fucking simple. My words, not hers.)
Threw a few more times with much better results and I got her to turn on the scoreboard so I could see what the improvement meant in points. First game was 50-something, next two games were in the 80s. Not only did I treble my score, I rolled three games in a row, which was pleasantly tiring but not exhausting. That blows my mind!
Afterward, we breezed through a nearby thrift store that GK discovered recently, and I got (among other things) a hanging closet organizer that Velcros to the bar to offer compartments I'll be stashing shoes and handbags in. Good quality, and I'd been looking at the cheapies at Walmart for about the same price, so good deal. And yes, I paused and tried a few of their chairs in between browsing housewares and DVDs and whatever, but the fact that I had enough energy to enjoy myself after a solid hour of physical activity is huge.
The next day was the Oddities and Curiosities Expo, which has been on my radar since November, when I spotted the first post about it on Fb. It wasn't exactly what I had in mind...I was thinking something like the Rock and Gem Show, but with more bones. Instead, it was a Goth paradise--apparently dismembering baby dolls and turning the parts into nightlights and collages is big money--and the place was jammed. Crowds bother me--I was not a happy bunny--and a lot of booths were so mobbed I couldn't get anywhere near them. Still, I acquired a few small goodies: a pendant, two rocks (a polished piece of labradorite and an opalized fossil shell) and a sweet little print of a Victorian lady and her motor car with Jupiter looming in the background.
The most important thing I got, though, was inspiration. As I think I've mentioned, I have plans to cosplay the Winter Soldier at Bubonicon (August). That requires planning. I've started growing my hair out--a nuisance. I ordered boots from China last month with the money I got for selling my couch--they're here, and while they aren't super high quality, they *do* fit, and look pretty badass. I was lucky enough to acquire a Nerf gun that I can paint and use as a prop. The vest and pants are black, shouldn't be too difficult. The thing I've been angsting about is The Arm. That's the most distinctive thing about the character, and I didn't want to do a cheesy job of it after putting a lot of work into the rest of it. Then, as I was perusing a booth with leather goods, I had an epiphany. They had a gauntlet with metal panels, and I went, OH!
Granted, it's been eons since I've done any leather-work, but it strikes me as considerably simpler than anything I've contemplated up to this point. It solves the problem of how to attach it, for one thing. Instead of trying to marry it to the vest, it's basically going to be a separate arm from fingertips to lats with straps to secure it and the vest will go on over it. *rubs hands together gleefully*
After we left the Expo, I persuaded GK to swing by our local Tandy Leather. I was just going to look, but I found a huge piece of shiny silver leather, about the same weight as vinyl, but yes, it IS leather--for $20. I snagged that bitch without a second thought. There's a lot of it, which givesme a margin for error.
Since then, I've been doing laundry and concentrating on my room. I've Kondoed my closet again--it never stops!--and parted with a lot of things that have had their day. Mind you, that doesn't include the stuff on/in the dryer, the laundry basket, my floored-robe, or my drawers. That's still a work in progress.
Of course, GK and I had an outing to another thrift store this afternoon, where I got a half-dozen new-to-me tops. In my defense, having just Kondoed, I at least knew what I was lacking and didn't just grab anything that fit.
Best acquisition: a denim jacket (Old Navy, very good condition)--I've been frequenting altered couture on Pintrest, and I keep lusting after embellished jackets. The prices they're asking, though--no fucking way. Maybe if I was completely without the most nominal crafting ability.... Which I'm not. I can sew competently--I'm not one of those timid souls who looks for no-sew solutions or tosses something because they haven't a clue how to mend a seam or sew on a button. . Another project....
Gah. I came in here over an hour ago, thinking I'd update while the laundry was going, and it's been done for a while. One down, at least two to go, which means three to put away, and by then, it'll be time to Kondo the closet yet again, because I still have more shit than space.
But not tonight.
Love to all.
