Tldr: Shit happens
Feb. 10th, 2019 02:15 pmA week ago, GK and I went by a thrift store that has 25% off everything on Sundays, and I got a sweet little Deco/mid-century desk that I'm planning to set up my sewing machine on. $26, and it solves the problem of being able to set my machine up and leave it up. GK was having van trouble and driving Mr. GK's compact car, so we had to wait til Tuesday to pick it up,
So on Tuesday, in addition to retrieving my new desk, GK was supposed to come by and we were going to spend the day building me a linen closet (remodeling the office closet). First, she was two hours late. Which I put to good use writing. We stopped by ReStore on the way to get the desk, because I have ideas for that closet and needed a few parts.
While we were there, GK happened to notice a mobility scooter in pristine condition for cheap. New it's $900+--they had it at $350. Immaculate shape, runs beautifully. I would've had one through Medicare, but they would only pay for an indoor model--I don't need it around the house!--what I need is something to take if we go to conventions where there's acres of walking. Anyway, I now have a scooter, yay, wheels!
Anyway, we went to ReStore, went and got the desk, went to Home Depot. That is, GK dropped me off and had to go do something or other. Not a successful trip, over all. I got a couple things, but I had a bitch of a time getting service, got overcharged for something, had to do a return (which crashed two out of three terminals at the Returns desk), forgot several things I needed to get--basically a cluster fuck, and I still don't have everything I need for the linen closet project, because Murphy's Law has kicked in with a vengeance.
One dogma of Murphy's Law states that everything takes longer than you think it will. This project exemplifies this. So I have a closet with a side-to-side rod and a built-in shelf in it. I want to take it all out and put in shelves, five or six of them--to stash the stuff that's taking over the rest of my house. Trailers are build with very flimsy drywall, so my plan calls for using the kind of board you find in an adjustable bookcase with holes for shelves pegs pre-drilled. To that end, I bought a cabinet at ReStore, thinking to take it apart and use the side boards in the closet. Got it home to discover that it was assembled by some very thorough individual who screwed it tightly together. Unscrew then manually? I got two screws out and said Forget that. I have a drill, but didn't have a screwdriver bit. GK brought some by, only to discover that my (free to good home) drill doesn't do reverse. So GK had to bring her drill over.
That was supposedly going to happen on Wednesday, but she said she had a headache and we'd do it Thursday. She came by late in the afternoon, and we DID get the cabinet disassembled. Then we discovered that the construction in the closet utilizes some kind of funky screws. Not flat, not Phillips, not hex--something else, peculiar to mobile homes. Grr. So that's on hold until GK has some time, which ain't gonna be for a while, because next week we're doing floral deliveries Wednesday and Thursday, and the following week she's out of town.
Short digression: Last year, GK got into genealogy for a while, and discovered that she has an older half-sister on her Dad's side. She's going to Georgia to meet her (and visit the peeps in Florida while she's close by). She'll be gone for 4-5 days, then when she gets back, no doubt she'll have to catch up on things at home and work--so I don't for a minute expect to get back to this business before March, if I'm lucky.
Meanwhile, everything that was stashed in the closet is heaped in my living room and piled on top of my washer and dryer. Dismembered pieces of the cabinet that are unnecessary are littering the porch, which is also occupied by the new scooter. The desk is occupying the space in front of the window where my altar usually lives, because I need to clear off the breakfast bar so I can take it down and put the desk over there. Living under the breakfast bar is the TV GK passed along when they got a new one. It's going into my bedroom...eventually.
I have a low, wide bureau in my room, on top of which I have a pair of matching caddies. They're black wood with wicker drawers, about ten inches tall. The TV has a 42" base--wider than the screen, and much wider than the caddies (which hold my jewelry, and take my word for it, there is nowhere else to put them). So I decided to span them with a board and set the TV on that. I found a black melamine shelf board at Home Depot--that and shelf pegs where my only successful acquisitions. Before I try to set up the TV, though, I need to get behind the dresser and plug in a power strip so it doesn't cause trouble like the one in the living room.
The TV in the living room is plugged into an outlet behind the long, low bookcase it's resting on. It's a mortal pain in the ass to get at, as I was reminded recently. However, good news, my BluRay player has not died horribly; apparently power was disrupted when the plug was knocked out of whack by the back of the bookcase. So I was able to rescue my Venom disc and I have Netflix on a decent-sized screen again, huzzah!
We got to see "In Like Flynn", which turned out to be less action movie and more bromance than we expected. Quite good, though. Last Friday was the annual ASFS auction, which went better than usual; I get several things I'd been keeping an eye on, Including a hardcover copy of "Artemis" by Andy Weir (who also wrote "The Martian"), which I've been wanting to read.
I just added up my output: so far this year, I've posted over 25,000 words. That's not including drabbles I've done at comment_fic, or multiple chapters of a few things that I'm still working on. That's just what I've posted. Holy crow, this writing every single day shit is spawning some impressive results!
Anyway, that's what new here. Love to all....
