vanillafluffy: (Housework)
Lots of yard/estate sales the last couple weeks...four or five, if I haven't lost count. The houses ranges from VERY posh to serious fixer-uppers--the last one I went to with GK had enormous growths of mold on the living and dining room ceilings, and the carpet was pretty scuzzy, too. However, I scored RocknRolla (scene-chewing gay Tom Hardy for the win!) and a hardback copy of Dick Francis's "Hot Money". Now, I already have a copy of "Hot Money" which I have no intention of getting rid of, because it's signed and personalized...but the dust jacket disappeared along the way. I played "Let's Make a Deal" with the check-out guy, whom I know from other sales, so really not an unreasonable purchase. Also got a shelf that's going into the bath, as soon as I get it cleaned up.

That was after a posh place in the Heights--ultra modern, with a lot of outsider art (that to me looked like it was crafted by a three-year old on meth, but that's just me)--I managed to acquire something I'd seen in their ad. They send out emails with links to photos, and I saw and fell in love with a sculpture of a retro bathing beauty sitting on a beach ball. She's going to look darling in my bath, but meanwhile, she's living on my dresser.

The week before, while I was running around with LL, we stopped in at the 11th hour of a sale on Sunday.  I got a couple goodies--an evening clutch, a glorious shawl, some smalls and a sweet copper kitchen clock. Alas, I made the rookie mistake of not plugging it in first--it doesn't fucking work. Grrr...it's a shame--it would've been perfect for the porch--I want a clock out there, because it's where I usually sit and wait for the senior bus or GK, etc. Sometimes I go out there just to read, as it's where the boks are.

Two sales with GK the week before...one was in the Heights and the woman had a ridiculous amount of money--as I remarked, I wish I had HALF of what that dame spent on craft supplies. It was insane--the entire backyard was set up with tables full of bins full of every kind of thing you could imagine and a lot you probably couldn't. I got a model Western saddle--it's perfect in my office--and a bag of beads and wire. I'd really like to start beading again!

The sale before that (same day),  was in a somewhat less posh midtown neighborhood, although it was quite a nice house. The lady of the house was a woman after my own heart--there was one whole room that was nothing but designer hats! Most of them were well outside of my price range, but I found one lovely black and white boater in a striped pattern. That was my big-ticket item of the day--$15, but I'm amortizing it by wearing it everywhere. The natural raffia cloche that was my go-to last summer is MIA, so it's not really an extravagance (she says earnestly). There was one I coveted, champagne-colored and covered with ivory roses--glorious, but a trifle dressy for my lifestyle and at $25, I'd never be able to wear it enough to justify it. I've already worn the one I got several times--pretty much every time I go anywhere. Black and white goes with SO much!

Other events of note...GK and I have gone to see "Poms" (a chick flick for gals of a certain age). It was well done; Diane Keaton still has the chops. Mind-boggling to realize her career has spanned fifty years! Also got to Shazam! at the second-run movie house. Definitely more of a kids movie, but with Mark Strong as the villain, I was perfectly willing to overlook a certain amount of nonsense, to the extent that I think it may have become my new favorite Christmas movie.

Had an appointment with my ophthalmologist last week--by the grace of God. See, I had a January appointment scheduled, which I missed, because I didn't have it written down and they failed to give me a reminder call. I rang them to check on the date of the appointment about three days too late. They scheduled me for what they SWORE was the next possible appointment...in May. Then called back a few days later and said 'Oops, we goofed, you were double-booked, we can't get you in until June.'. Come June, I couldn't find where I'd written down the date and time--I'd been out and about when they called back--so I rang them and lo and behold, they said "Tomorrow afternoon'. So I scheduled a bus ride immediately and went.

They did a visual field test. Left eye is perfectly normal, hooray, hooray. The right eye has a bit of scarring from the vitrectomy...the upper curve and the lower inside (about 7:00, looking out) aren't all they could be, but it's not bad. The pressure in my eyes was a real cause for concern last year; 20 is considered high, and I was 22 on both eyes. So I've been taking drops every night and now they're down to 12 and 15. The retinopathy is stable. I'm much relieved, and I go back in November.

Since GK has finally gotten a newer vehicle, we're talking about a road trip to CO to see Doc (her surviving bro) and his family. Probably next month some time. There are also a couple day trips that have been long postponed because of her unreliable former vehicle--like Galistea. That's the town out in the boonies where they filmed "Thor". High on my NM bucket list!

My writing has stalled; instead, I'm binge-watching things like Sherlock, Murder Maps, The Great British Baking Show and assorted movies. I have three WIPs that need my attention, and I
can't bring myself to focus on any of them. Maybe because I feel guilty about not working on the house, either. I haven't sorted the linens, the kitchen is atrocious, laundry is accumulating everywhere, I started sorting books and haven't continued because I need tape for boxes...I'm a hot mess, and sine it's June, it's only going to get hotter.

Love to all!
