Sharing the love for my adopted hometown

This month marks 34 years that I've lived in Florida. (In this very same house, which may help explain why I'm always qvelling about what a MESS this place is!) So, in honor of the anniversary, here's a wee tribute to the Space Coast corner of the Sunshine State.

Florida is not just oranges
We have our share of history
And pop culture references
And the technology of tomorrow

I've only been to Florida ONE time, and that was when I lived in Miami for 4 months in the late 80's (helloooo, Miami Vice). My God, the humidity! It's like trying to breathe through wet cotton. And it appears that everything is bigger in Florida - the leaves on the plants, the BUGS. I remember there were all these cute little lizards scampering up and down the trees in the backyard. The ocean and the city skyline were amazing, though.

My overwhelming impression? Beautiful, interesting place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. ;-)

I haven't been to Miami since...1973?...when we were house-hunting. My mom had aunts who lived there, but she and dad came to the conclusion that they didn't want to be quite THAT close to them, so we ended up 200 miles up the coast. (We still have the bugs and the lizards, though....)

There's actually a street called 'I Dream of Jeannie Lane'???

There is. In Cocoa Beach. They dedicated it as a publicity stunt some years ago, and got Barbara Eden to unveil it. (Pun unavoidable.)

Southbeach... party and the ocean. The ocean has this calming effect on people. (Especially when they throw things into that no longer mean anything to them.) :)

Oooh, South Beach. All those gorgeous Deco hotels...*heart* Being an architecture slut, I'm envious!

I will celebrate my 33rd anniversary in Brevard county come December.
I am actually a native, born in Pensacola. We moved away and returned in 1975, when I was 15. HATED it! Taking a high school sophomore away from all of the kids she's ever known was not a cool thing for my folks to do. In hindsight, I am very glad that they did!
Congrats to you!

I landed here at 13 3/4, a few days after my 8th grade graduation, and LOATHED it. Compared to Staten Island, where I grew up, Cocoa was the humid armpit of the South, and I was a total fish out of water. I'd say, "God, I miss bagels!" only to hear, "What's a bagel?" In those days, they didn't even have FROZEN bagels, and none of the locals had a clue. I'd say, "It's shaped like a donut, but instead of cake, it's made of bread." and they'd go, "Huh? What?" (And they still don't know squat from cannolis, despite those things in the bakery case at Publix.) I made elaborate run-away-from-home plans that never materialized, but these days, I can't imagine living anywhere else, ESPECIALLY Staten Island.
