Let's do the time warp again!
Did a bit of rooting around in the living room this evening. Sorted a basket full of old bills and such, winnowed about 75% of it to shred. Started work on the entertainment unit that I want the new (inherited from Kat a year ago) TV to go into. The difficulty with that is, the e-unit is packed with stuff from top to bottom.
I started in the middle, figuring if nothing else, I could empty it out and get the TV off the floor and into that big opening. Encountered a large box filled with four old purses (one with reciepts dated August 1999) and a bunch of cassette tapes. I don't even know where my cassette player is, but with my luck, if I pitch them, I'd end up with a very retro vehicle as my next car. They're jinx protection, pure and simple.
In addition to the e-unit, there are two bookcases crammed with tapes dating back to 1984 when I got my first VCR. Getting rid of them (or at least 90% of them) will free up TONS of space and let me move the bookcases elsewhere.
Seriously, Fluffy? The Commish? Is available on DVD. These? Are VHS! The vid equivalent of 8-track, FFS. And Iron Chef TOS is on the Cooking Channel every day.
I have a credenza destined for the living room---it's going to replace the other e-unit, the one my old TV is in now. I'm not keeping any more tapes than will fit in its three bottom drawers, and possibly not even that many. (The long-term plan being to either rip them or get the corresponding DVDs. A few things have never made it to DVD, like The Burning Zone, Vengeance Unlimited, Wildside, Misfits of Science---so I need to sort carefully.) Fortunately, the important stuff was labeled. Let's just hope it's all still playable!

lol @ the video tapes and cassettes.
I still use my VCR, but I have boxes of cassette tapes -- and my tape player broke about three years ago. :P
Cassettes are like little audio-snapshots of who you were at the time. I'm thinking of making a list (or lists) of the ones I listened to the most. I know I want to add a couple of the inserts to my photo album, maybe even print out the lyrics to a few of my favorite songs.
It's kind of like what I want to do with the too-tight, too-old, too-not!me clothes in my closet that even the thrift stores wouldn't take. I'm going to cut out an 8x8 inch square and some of the trim or buttons. Then I'm going to make a batch of patchwork shams, maybe even a lap cover.
I figure it's a good way of keeping the memories fresh while ditching the clutter.

I used to have two tape decks hooked up so that I could record from other media---CDs, vinyl, even the TV. I made mix tapes for my then-vehicle, which only had a cassette player. That was 15-20 years ago---time flies, too bad clutter doesn't. It just hangs around and roosts.
I have ideas of projects I want to do with blue jeans, but that can wait until I've thinned out enough stuff to be able to set up the sewing machine.

I am however, eventually going to convert all my vinyl to electronic files. I have the turntable to do it now I just need to find the time! *G*

Learning to let go is also on my to-do list.

P.S. For some asshat reason LJ answers you write to not show up in my email anymore. *stares at LJ accusingly*
Re: Tip for VHS longer life
Funny thing I found yesterday while I was cleaning---old, old TV Guide from when CSI: Miami first aired, with a headline asking "Can David Caruso turn up the heat in Miami?"

And this comment came through. Go figure.
Plus I am sorry I sounded half-idiot on the yesterday's post. I cannot seem to see my missing/misspelt words while I write.
