Dean Winchester's Philosophy of Channel Surfing

There's one movie Dean Winchester will always stop at when he's channel surfing and finds it. Beginning when he was seven or eight, he's embraced Conan the Barbarian as his movie. "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger" says the very first screen. Yeah, later he heard that some guy named Nietzche was the one who wrote it down, but in his heart, Dean long ago decided Arnold was right.

That philosophy made it just a little easier to take when Dad was pushing him to train, when he was up against something that wanted to devour him, when the whole world was breathing down his neck. He'd bitch---that was only natural---but mostly, it was just, suck it up, it won't kill you. Look at Conan---his whole family was butchered right in front of him when he was a kid, and he grew up to kick ass and take names. It's a good prescedent, right? Dean has the remote in his hand and a smile on his face.

Sam doesn't get it, doesn't understand why he loves this particular movie---even more than the Terminator flicks, and those are freaking awesome---but although Sam may have even read Nietzsche, he'll never comprehend his brother's attitude about that quote. After all, he was the younger brother. He wasn't the one Dad turned to for help with all the disagreeable stuff---burning bodies, digging up graves, killing creatures---Sam didn't get exposed to a lot of that until he was years older than Dean had been when he started doing it. Maybe that explains why he likes all that Hallmark crap with plots and drama and emo, for crying out loud...Dean shakes his head and licks his lips at the fastastic blonde valkyrie Conan is doing. No accounting for taste....

"Ah, come on, Dean! Not Conan again!" groans Sam from the other bed. "Would it kill you to watch something else?"

Awwe! Cute, with the perfect smidgen of angst. I've never actually seen Conan before, but I think it's pretty awful. Witch just makes this better, right?

Whereas, I've seen it almost as many times as Dean has, so yeah. It's all good.

was grace jones in conan the barbarian? or was there a second one? because i've seen that a couple times on tv, and wow is it cheesy. O.O (but i watched until the end....) i can picture a seven-year-old dean totally taking it to heart, and watching it every time it's on. and i like the little detail about sam not understanding because he was sheltered from a lot of the crap.

Grace Jones was in the second one. :-)

The first one also includes the line, "Do you want to live forever?" said most times just before the characters do something really rash.

Teresa, who knows a bit too much about the Conan films.

*grin* Yeah. I had SUCH a crush on Sandahl Bergman. (And I'm almost pathetically het, so you *know* she must be something special.)

Grace was in the second one; yes, cheese abounds. The first one was awesome, though: James Earl Jones was the villain, the love interest was a smokin' hot blonde, and Conan got seriously tortured. Great stuff!

So breakfast food provides plot bunnies. Huh. Gotta try that sometimes...

There's a reason they say it's the most important meal of the day!

I am still reminded of the awful Soviet time when newer Hollywood movies were just making their roads into our cinemas. Conan was one of the first, I think, that I saw in the big screen. And there were no subtitles but a live translation by a nervous inept guy! Hilarious! Especially the last tear-wrencher scene when Valeria is dying and hearing her say: "I love you, Conan." in a very male voice was well... *dies laughing*

*tries to pictue Sandahl Bergman as a tenor* Oh my. That does sound memorable.

Congrats on the new icon!

Hee!
Great Dean moment. And the importance of popular culture.
I've got things like that - they aren't as good the 'proper' way as they are the way I knew them first.

awesome---but then, Sam may have even read Nietzsche, but he'll never comprehend his brother's attitude about that quote. This is very true - except that you can't have both 'but's.
From: [identity profile] vanillafluffy.livejournal.com
you can't have both 'but's.

Dude, I *knew* something was wrong with that sentence...that's what happens when I don't spent days tweaking...thanks!

Cute!

And lord I've not seen that movie in ages, but I can totally see it being a favorite of Dean's!

I haven't seen it in ages, either, but I loved it when it came out. I think Dean is usually more of an action-movie fan---anything with lots of car chases and explosions---and then this idea popped up. (I just write what the bunnies tell me to....)
