Okay, Plan B,,,,

Went up to PJ's garage of choice, which is quite close by. I happened to mention that I hoped they had a good jack, as mine is the little Tinkertoy that comes with the donut.
Some consternation ensued, as they'd only been told it was flat and were planning to take an air compresser along and pumping it up. Nope, not gonna work. That tire's not only merely dead, it's really most sincerely dead. Chewed up. Destroyed. Beyond the help of air or a can of Fix-a-Flat.
Told them my plan was to put the donut on and take it over to my regular used tire place. Which I don't think they were too happy about---they sell tires there: NEW tires. Pearls before swine, considering the general age and decrepitude of my car. And considering the fact that I've had that particular tire on for a few years---it was used when I got it, I commuted to Melbourne on it and it's been patched twice that I can remember---so there's nothing inherently wrong with used tires, as long as it's from a trustworthy source.*
Anyway, I gave the guy my car key, and I'm waiting by the phone to hear how it goes.

* I'm not going to go into the whole saga of the time HWSNBN almost got us killed by accepting a used tire that blew on the interstate. Because it *still* makes me froth at the mouth. I've forgiven him for a lot of things, but the PTSD that caused lingers.
