Members of my f'list who've played RPGs may be familiar with the term "willpower roll", IE, casting dice to see if your character has enough character to perform a certain action. This morning, getting my ass out of bed, showered and dressed and to church was a major willpower roll, the difficulty somewhat lessened by the fact that AI was scheduled to be the speaker.

I bolted through the shower (did NOT wash my hair), pulled on a lime green knit top that I've had for at least 10 years under a secondhand denim jumper (acquired on my very first trip to Melbourne Goodwill on the day I interviewed for my job), denim sandals from W*M and off I went.

Was underwhelmed to find out that AI had been superceded by another speaker, and seriously entertained the idea of drifting back home to bed, but didn't. (My mama raised me better than that.) AI was there, though, and she'd been cleaning out her closet. Oh happy day, I inherited a sweet baby blue batik overshirt that goes just perfectly with denim, thank you very much!

The speaker is not one of our regulars; he's drier than I like, but one thing he touched on intrigued me. This gentleman became a Unitarian minister late in life, and he talked about how both his parents were the same faith as their parents, but of their five children, three of them, including himself, have taken other spiritual paths. He refered to our congregation as "a church of the mind", meaning that we don't claim to have the answers, but that we are supporting each other as we ask questions and discuss possibilities. And that's true---last week, we had a pagan ritual for the first harvest, the week before, one of our members who's a special ed teacher did a presentation on autism, next week, someone is speaking on reincarnation and the time between lives, the talk AI has rescheduled is on the tombs of Jesus, and in November, I'm signed up to give a talk on E-commerce---it's a very mixed bag, and even when it gets a little dry, it's NEVER boring.

I'm told that not all UU churches are quite that ecclectic, but this one suits me perfectly. If you'd told me fifteen years ago that I'd ever happily get up on a Sunday morning and skip off to church, I would've given you the laser-beam-death-glare and incinerated you to charcoal briquettes. The funny thing is, the guy who introduced me to the church wasn't a member---he wasn't even someone I liked---he was an obnoxious friend of H.W.S.N.B.N., who told me about a discussion group they used to hold. That's since disbanded; I went mostly to shut him up about it, ended up going to a Sunday morning service, and found my people. H.W.S.N.B.N. and his loud-mouthed friend are both long gone, but I'm still at UU, and grateful for it.

I'm also a bit sleep-deprived, having nodded off around 4 AM and waking at 9:35. I ran by Publix on the way home for a few essentials, and now I'm going to take a wee nap....
