First writing project of 2008
Jan. 6th, 2008 11:10 pmThere were a few lulls at work last night, and because I'm here and don't have anyone breathing down my neck/looking over my shoulder, I was able to pursue the epiphany that dawned on me. (Appropriate, given the time of year!) I've had an idea for Bobby's backstory---it's been germinating for months, but I was convinced I'd never find time to write it---and I finally realized that there was an easier way to do it: I just had to change the POV.
A few years back, I got a very valuable piece of advice, and it worked here: You don't necessarily want to give away the central character's POV. Sometimes it's more effective if you observe that character and report what someone else sees.
In this case, it also simplified the story, because although *I* know the behind-the-scenes of it all, my viewpoint character doesn't---and doesn't need to for the story to flow. If I'd tried to write it from Bobby's POV, it would've been ten times as long. This way, it's more of a snapshot than a documentary.
It'll take a little polishing, but I ought to get the rough edges off in time to post it before they air the next fresh ep---which supposedly reveals the canon version. We'll see!
