My bank is in the process of merging with another bank, and apparently this is important enough to warrant them sending me a NEW bank card, even though the one I already have was just issued in January. THAT'S been deactivated, which is why I was having trouble at Wal*mart.

I was perfectly happy with my old bank just the way it was, and I'm having to fight the urge to pull my account before I see for myself what the new regime will be like. (I may open another account elsewhere so it will be in place just in case. Grrr!)

I've activated the new card, but I'm giving it the hairy eyeball: My old card was a pretty blue and had dolphins printed on it. This one is totally generic. Aesthetics, people!

It turned out Red had some errands to do, so we just hit the bookstore---after peering into trunks checking out each other's trades, wise-cracking about dealing books in the parking lot. We walked into the bookstore, me wheeling a dolly with four cartons of books stacked on it, and this guy turns away from the nearest shelf and asks, "Have you got any Stuart Woods in there?"

As a matter of fact I did. Which one? "Grass Roots." Right here on top, how's THAT for timing? I ended up giving him the book, and BookstoreGuy gave me a sweet deal on my selections. (And let me post-date a check for Friday. Plus, I've got $75 credit toward future purchases.)

My earlier comments on my bank's shenanigans brought a flurry of mail to my inbox while I was out meeting with Red. I'd prefer to stick with these guys unless they turn out to be total thieves, since I've got my direct deposit going there (and did for my previous job as well), and better the devil you know, right?

I think I'll have some brunch now....
