My mouth still hurts from last week, but still, I've persisted. Tuesday was the Foot and Ankle Specialist. All good, although according to the wristcuff-type blood pressure monitor, mine was 72/49. (Scary, right? It would explain my constant wooziness!) From there I went for a haircut and had a small catastrophe--the young lady knocked over my cane, which fell to the concrete floor and beheaded my beautiful brass-headed cane. She comped the haircut, which is less than spectacular.

From there, I trudged over to the grocery store (40 yards, maybe?). Already tired and VERY upset about the cane, since the top was not ringed with a ridge of jagged metal, which made using it hazardous. One good thing happened: I know from long experience that they will discount ground beef the day before the Sell By date. I got ahold of a sweetheart in the meat department who marked a $6 tray of hamburger down to $1.99! Score! I'm trying to eat my way through my pantry before September 12, so I browned it and threw in cans of beans, chili, corn and some diced tomatoes. Boiled up half a box of noodles and have been living off that for the last couple nights (tonight, too, and possibly tomorrow!).

Wednesday I was wiped out, and pissed off, because for some reason, I couldn't access LJ. I didn't have trouble with anything else, just that. Finally, after a day of it not loading, I got smart and did the old "turn the modem off and back on" trick, and now it seems to be working!

Thursday: Ophthalmologist. Eyes dilated, thank goodness I have prescription sunglasses! Totally worth it! Mixed news: The retinopathy (irritation) I had a year ago is almost gone, yay. I suspect it may have to do with my reduced A1C; I may be wrong. Anyway, that's the good news. The less than stellar news is, the pressure on my optic nerves is TOO HIGH (should be under 20, but it's 22 in one eye and 24 in the other). So I've got drops, take 'em once a day, he says (I figure same time as insulin--midnight--which I have an alarm set for).

According to him, the drops are basically the same stuff they were touting a few years ago to increase one's eyelashes. He says the stuff was developed to reduce pressure--somebody noticed the side-effect of eyelash growth and started hawking it as a beauty assist. (Doesn't that also have an affect on eye color, I asked him. He was impressed by my memory, but that seemed like such a terrific clue for something! Anyway, stay tuned, we'll see what happens.)

By the time I got home--I had to wait 45 minutes in the sun for the van service--I was dead. Fell into bed and slept until my Colbert alarm went off--five solid hours.

Today GK came by after a sale with some loot for me--a big, amazing leopard-print bag for one thing! A cool 70's swag lamp--amber glass in an egg shape (I'll get pics). A tension rod and some smalls, and some McNuggets. We sat and schmoozed while I chowed down, then we FINALLY got over to MVD, which I just didn't have the energy for while she was gone. Hooray, hooray--I should have my permanent handicapped placard within the next couple of weeks and they gave me temporary proof, yay.

From there, we went to Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I was looking for a decent desk chair, but they were all over-priced. However, GK made the find of the year, some absolutely sensational patterned tiles (4" square). They had a bunch in two different patterns--fortuitously, she liked one pattern while I preferred the other. At a mere 30 cents apiece, I now have enough for a tile back-splash in my bathroom. It's a sweet little yellow+cobalt+white design--now all I have to do is ferret out the right blue for the walls. Sadly, aqua isn't going to play well with it...but that's okay. This will go a long way to offset the plastic shower enclosure (I wanted tile, I really did, it's what I was used to in Florida, so this makes me REALLY HAPPY.) Maybe I can match the cobalt color and freehand something?

NEXT WEDNESDAY: Mr. GK is out of town, she's coming over early (while it's cool) and we're going to get busy with some of the labor-intensive things that need to be done--hang the living room curtains, a wall-mounted shelf and that new swag lamp. GK is talking about putting another light kit on the ceiling fan in the living room, which would be excellent. Possibly a few other small tasks--I need to make a list. I want to get as much done before the surgery as I can, because I want to look around while I'm recuperating and feel serene, not frustrated.

NEXT THURSDAY: Cardiologist. Lovely.

NEXT WEEKEND: Bubonicon. I'm trying to round up some things to put in the auction--it would be nice to make a couple bucks. It isn't like last year, when I was mad to meet CJ Cherryh...there's just a very short list of people I'm impressed by these days, what can I say? I like Connie Willis--she's been in previous years, but not this year. Still, it's an Event.

Typo of the week: Meant to type "Day of the Dead". Typed "Dad of the Dead" instead, so now I'm thinking of a really cheesy zombie movie where the teenage sons end up as walking dead and their divorced father (I'm picturing Steve Carrell or Luke Wilson) is all defensive and protective but at the same time, he's trying to keep his new girlfriend from finding out OR getting infected. Where do I come up with this shit?!

Love to all!
