More pseudo-gardening

As much as I'd like to say I got a lot done today, it isn't exactly true. I burned a CD because I'm a little burned-out on the one that's currently in my car, and did some more work on the porch. You'd think that by now, this little six-by-twelve rectangle would be immaculate, which would be wrong.
Today I potted the seeds I got at Wal*mart on Sunday: tomato, lime basil, sage, dill and some carnations. Pulled up MORE weeds---ferns are officially weeds when they're encroaching on my porch---moved everything around and swept, pitched a few things that were past their prime---an old hose, a rusted tomato cage---restacked the pots, which I'll be needing when the seeds sprout---piddly stuff, but it gives me a good feeling to walk up to the door and NOT have it all a big mess.
I think, as far as the exterior goes, it's the equivalent of starting to clean my house by beginning with my office---they're both small but important spaces. My office still needs to lose a goodly amount of STUFF, but it's a great deal less cluttered than it was in October. My front porch has a way to go before it's worthy of Better Homes and Gardens---boy, does it ever!---but it's a helluva lot tidier than it was two months ago!
I don't really regard what I'm doing at this point as actual gardening, more along the lines of prep work, but I'll get there. Not having to worry about mowing the freaking lawn makes a huge difference---what's the point of putting in flowers if you can't see them past the grass/weeds? It's not going to happen overnight, or even this summer, but I feel like it might actually be manageable.
Anyway, it's very nice to be able to go out there and sit and catch any breeze that happens to be wafting past. Maybe next I'll work on the terrace at the far end of the house....

Date: 2008-03-12 11:00 pm (UTC)I'd really like to get some hanging baskets for the porch and put something cheap and hardy like petunias in them. Flowers are such a spirit-lifter, but I didn't put any out the past few years when the porch so badly needed paint. Now that it's all spiffed up again, some flowers will be nice.

Date: 2008-03-13 12:50 am (UTC)Petunias are nice. I was looking at plants at Wal*mart, which is what convinced me to go with seeds, at least for the moment. (After I've taken care of the property taxes, I may treat myself to a flat of marigolds or the like.)
