Yesterday, I managed to do a load of laundry and flung the worst of the science projects from the fridge. (I still would not go so far as to say the fridge is CLEAN, but at least there's nothing actively funky in there at the moment.)

I also took my mini TV and hooked it up to the cable connection in my bedroom, because I was tired of having the cable box/DVR just sitting there auto-recording stuff I don't give a damn about. (Changed the programming, too.) Sadly, the auto-record kicks the old stuff out after a certain length of time, so I STILL haven't seen/won't get to see the finale of Torchwood. It does, however, have the finale of SPN, so all's not lost....

Another loathesome thing about BSNB: they apparently don't add incoming deposits until the new business day officially starts. My old bank did it at midnight, and I've paid plenty of bills at 1 AM. Can't do that with these turkeys....

I'm doing laundry, too. The stuff seems to breed when I'm not looking: I did seven loads on Saturday and there will be five today. When I lived alone, I did one load of regular clothes and one of sheets and towels once a week. I have no idea why having a family doubles the amount of dirty laundry produced.

The fridge is clean but, aside from condiments, pretty bare. Grocery shopping is definitely on the agenda for tomorrow morning.

Look! It's the incredible disappearing paycheck!

I see myself picking up a few basics: bread, eggs, margerine, bottled water, and living out of my freezer and cupboards for the next couple of weeks, because I paid 2 different kinds of insurance, partial cable, renewed my user pics and 6 months worth of LJ, and I still have to fill my gas tank and find money for the Guatemalan Forestry Service.

My check was about $70 short this week because of a combination of the way the days fell and shorter summer hours kicking in. That's about what I need to spend to put a year's worth of minutes in my phone this week, so the groceries will be just absolute necessities. I have a little chicken and fish in the freezer, but nothing else in the way of meats -- they've just been too expensive to stock up on.

WinnDixie had a few decent specials over the last month or so, so I'm not too bad off for protein. I could stand to pick up a couple cans of tomato sauce, but I've got like, eight cans of green beans and plenty of rice and pasta. It's just going to take advance planning...since my days have been shortened by 2 1/2 hours because of The Commute.

I need to remind my son, the Bottomless Pit, to eat more homemade popcorn and apples as a snack. He also tends to drink way more milk, at $4 a gallon, than he needs when he's around the house. During the school year, he gets a 12 oz. glass of it at breakfast and supper and that's it. He's gone through 2 1/2 gallons in the week he's been out of school!

It's time to break out out my collection of "fake it" recipes and mix up some of that orange juice/strawberry Kool-Aid punch that tastes just like Sunny Delight.

Sunny D? Eww, that is some EVIL stuff. Happily, Walmart has their generic version of Crystal Light which is drinkable and comes in a variety of flavors. There's also iced tea, the house wine of the South....

I should say it tastes better than Sunny D, because it does! :) It's just a can of orange juice concentrate mixed up with a packet of strawberry Kool-Aid and somewhat less sugar than usual.

We hit the mother lode at Dollar Tree and got Wyler's lite lemonade mix for $1 a can, which is cheaper even than Wal-Mart. Alas, Dollar Tree is not very reliable about stocking particular brands, so we may never see that again. I'm the only iced tea drinker in the family. "House wine of the South" is such a cute way to put it.

Would that it were original---I don't recall where I pilfered the phrase from.

I'll have to cruise Big Lots and some of the dollar stores...maybe I can find a deal on tomato sauce there.

Big Lots used to have tomato sauce for a quarter a can. Good stuff, too, like Hunt's and Contadina. For the past couple of years, since our town's Big Lots was closed, I've stocked up on the every other month trip to Sav-a-Lot. Their canned tomato products are really good.
