Have I mentioned lately how much I abominate drunk!John Winchester fics? ([livejournal.com profile] karaokegal, for me, this is the equivalent of J/I in terms of being thoroughly unpalatable.) Okay, I know, I'm biased, but I'm a John!girl through and through, and my canon does NOT go that way. Anyway, I saw someone asking for tangental info on boozing (and other details) in a com, and from the background info given, it was pretty clear what fandom it was for. *headdesk*

In other news, the actor who will always be Mark Warner to me has a role as a sleazy DA in the new show Raising the Bar, just in case someone has a crush or wants to do a crossover of some kind.

How has no one figured out Alcoholic/Drunk Hunter=Dead Hunter? Or, equally, Hungover Hunter=Dead Hunter.

A drinker has hand shakes, blurred vision and a queezy stomach after a bender that lasts for quite a long time...sometimes days, and usually STINKS of alcohol for just as long. JUST the way to go hunt a Werewolf, a Vampire, a Wendigo or a Chupacabra! *grumbles*

Two thumbs up! Exactly! Now possibly, maybe, tentatively, he might've gone off the wagon right after Mary's death, before he got answers from Missouri, before he started hunting. After that? No way.

Considering the worry John showed talking about Dean's muteness 20 years later, I'm inclined to doubt that he ignored his sons in favor of a bottle.

I have NO doubt that at times John got hammered, and being the kind of man he was, I bet it was a SPECTACULAR hammering. BUT I also wager it was a once a year thing... November 2nd.

*nods* In a rousing bit of irony, I've signed up as speaker at church for November 2nd of this year. In our church, speaker doesn't necessarily mean standing up and giving a talk---it can also mean a presentation of some kind. We've had various TV eps from everything from Twilight Zone and The West Wing to Rumpole of the Bailey. As long as it has some kind of spiritual message, it's all good. So I figure Houses of the Holy would be just the ticket. *grin*

Irony indeed! And good choice. Bet that'll spark some chat.

*pricks up ears* Rumpole?? I ADORED Leo McKern as Rumpole!!!

Someone, a SPN fic writer responding in comments to someone else's story (and I'm old and feeble, forgive me not remembering who) mentioned that she had taken Sam's POV as gospel in S1, resented Dean, and hated John for the way he'd treated Sam. That she couldn't believe the emotion evinced by all the men in Shadow when it aired, and all the way through Dean Man's Blood and Salvation she was sure there was a whiskey glass at John's hand. On rewatch during hiatus, she realized that Sam had a (very) subjective and unreliable POV. And as she paid particular attention, at no time was there liquor onscreen anywhere in John's vicinity.

I think it's dreadfully unfortunate that many people load their own parental issues onto John, when he doesn't deserve it.

Was he a faultless dad? No. Did he do the very best he could for his boys under horrific circumstances? Yes. Would they have been better off with foster families? No. Unsafe and unprotected from what stalked them. He made hard choices, and some of them were wrong. But speaking as a parent, that comes with the job.

I concur 100%! I've said the same thing...that, and, I think the younger fangirls, the ones who are still coping with parental authority, are going to see *any* kind of discipline as arbitrary.

Lately there's a multitude of Ianto/Doctor fics which also gripe my guts as I assume they are meant to make the Doctor/Jack relationship less important and to beef up the most useless character ever written.

And I can ALWAYS tell when someone does an "information" request that is leading to some such rubbish.

I still can't look at any given episode of Eureka without seeing "Henry" and saying "Yo, Senator Wright!"

Yup. Even when I don't recognize the name of the petitioner. And then I have to count to 10 a few time to stop myself from commenting on what a shite viewpoint that is...and not supported by canon, and just plain wrong...after all, they DO have a Constitutional right to their bogus opinion.

*sigh*

Just keep writing the correct viewpoint and flood their comms with the truth! (A small cabal of us are planning an amphibious landing to reinforce the fact that there is more to Torchwood Slash than the loathesome J/I crap.)
