I set my alarm for 6:40, awoke 10 minutes early and bounced out of bed for the semi-annual Asbury Arms Fall Sale. I've long since sworn off other yard and rummage sales---this is my big extravagance, and if I'm not one of the first few people in line, I figure my morning's been wasted. :D The doors open at 8 AM sharp, and I'm generally home between 9-9:30.

Today, I was the first person in line (not the only time I've done that, either). They had less stuff than usual, but I got some great deals on what I did get: a small lamp for my desk---since the fan was installed in my office, I haven't had a light fixture---a Corningware pie plate, a medium-sized 70s Mediteranean-style mirror, a hammered aluminum bowl, some linens, books and a baggie of jewelery (including a sterling link bracelet for 75 cents) all for about $20.

Oh, and I got The Queen's Chair---so dubbed by a gal I was chatting with in line who saw me carrying it out. It's wrought-iron, VERY solid, has a back that reminds me of a peacock's fan, curlicued arms and a white cushion. That was my single most expensive item, at $3. There is a reason I go there year after year!

I can tell "autumn" has arrived; I've actually worn jeans twice this week! It isn't that it's very much cooler, but the humidity has receded noticably.

For my next trick, I'm going to have breakfast and go catch another couple hours of sleep before I have to go to work. I'm so glad today is my Friday!

Congrats! Heaven knows, I could stand to go through my clothes AGAIN, because it's amazing how I'll pile up laundry and when I get around to doing it, it's all, "Oh, is THAT where that went?!" or "Where the heck did THAT come from?"---and right now, the pile is pretty big! Anything could be in there!

My wardrobe has been pared down to about three feet of hanging space for what I'm wearing now and another three feet on the top rail of the closet for out-of-season and special occasion clothes. I tend to be pretty ruthless about pitching stuff that didn't work out at the end of the season. (Socks are another story -- I keep those forever -- although I did toss about ten pairs into the going-to-the-thrift-shop basket last weekend.)

It's the memory of cleaning out my mother's house, where she had clothes piled on the bed almost to the ceiling, that makes me do that. Had I never had to deal with that, I'd probably still be a happy clothes collector.

Right now, the Art Deco cedar chest in my bedroom is covered with (mostly) clothes to a peak of about three feet. I kind of know what's under there because I can't find it in my closet, but it's intimidating (which is pretty much the state of the whole damned house).

If/when I kick the bucket, I want the proceeds of the estate sale to go to my church. Or sold on eBay. Whatever. By then, I'll be past caring what anyone thinks about my rotten housekeeping and collection of porn!
