At this time of year, it's going around. You know what I mean: that Christmas meme. I've seen it on at least three of youse guys LJs, so I know I'm not the only one hoping for a special surprise something.

The Rules

Step One

- Make a post (public, friends locked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Dean/Alastair icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for The Burning Zone on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/flat-screen TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ.

Step Two

- Surf around your friends list (or friends of friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a brown, women's size 30 leather jacket you don't want or a 7-11 gift certificate you won't use - or know where you could get someone's dream purebred standard poodle for free - (shelter dogs and rescues are really the way to go), go for it.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf - to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not - it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

I hope you'll let me know where your wishes are, if you make a list of your own!

My Wishes

2 - a subscription to Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion
3 - one or more Styrofoam wig/hat stands, used is fine, and/or round hatboxes

What kind of cut do you mean? Do you mean having a hyperlink to another website?

Maybe...? I mean the kind of cut where you post a story on a com and when you click on the cut tag it takes you away from the com to where the story is on your journal. I'm clueless as to what the technical name for it is AND how to do it. I've been on LJ for three years now, and I feel really dumb still having to paste in the URL.

Yup, I know how to do it.

Take out all the weird spaces and it'll look like this:
< a href="http : / /www.lookkitme.com" >place clickie words here!< / a >

That's all there is to it!

I'll experiment with it tomorrow when I'm awake. Just now, I'm off to bed. Thanks ever so much!

It's really easy, but really easy to forget, too. So you may want to write it down or remember what entry it's in.

I have a doc I keep things like that in, although I've memorized the user-icon cut and seldom use that anymore. I'm just really happy I've done it!

LJ-cut: substitute angle brackets <> for the squares:

[lj-cut] or (if you want it say something other than 'read more') [lj-cut text="clever text"]

And of course to make it end, [/lj-cut]

Also, I will do that multi image icon for you. Just email me the photos and your instructions/wishes!

Awesome is what you are!

I'll have to experiment with the cut, because I still don't grasp how that's going to get me from Point A in a community to Point B at my journal.

Yay, icon! My concept is, clothing as a means of expressing mood and identity. "Who do you want to be today?" is an Oingo Boingo song from the 80s, and it's also the question I ask myself every day when I stand in from of my closet. It may take a couple emails to send all the pix. I want to show each word separately with 2 or 3 images behind each word. And I thank you thank you thank you, because I've wanted this icon for ages!

No worries about the icon. May not be before December, tho', due to nanowrimo. But that's only a week away. :-)

Also, an lj cut is the sort of thing you use to hide long sections of text (on your own lj probably) or photos, so that readers have the option of clicking if they want to read, and your post doesn't (a) fill more than a screenload or (b) slow down their load rate by forcing photos on them. They're particularly wonderful for concealing JUST a photo, or a story spoiler, or whatevs, if more text comes after.

That isn't what I mean, then, becase I already know how to do those. *sigh* I think the next poster answers that question, but I haven't had a chance yet to fiddle with it and see how it works.

Ah yes, what you are looking for is how to make a link back to your LJ, where the link shows as some text other than the actual URL.

As before, replace the squares with angle brax, and you're ready to go:

[a href="http://yourlongurl.com"]link text[/a]

And I'll get you the images for the icon sometime in the next week or so---I'm not worried if it's done before Xmas, I've had the idea for ages, what's another month?

You're very welcome. I thought that it would be nice to have a central location everyone could find to make granting the wishes just a little bit easier.

Fell free if you'd like to pass word about the comm around. :)
