Last night at 11:45, my power went out. It wasn't directly caused by weather; it was quiet, dispite having rained all fucking day. The FPL recorded message said it should be on by 4 AM, which didn't make me happy, but, what can you do?

I'm really thankful it was a temperate night; if this had happened in July or August, I would've ended up camping out at WalMart. Even without working fans, it wasn't uncomfortably hot. Not cool, either, but rather neutral.

Lights et al finally came back on at 10:15, thank you, thank you, thank you. Now if I can just stop humming "Wichita Lineman"....

What I think is hysterical is that this has probably not been the first time that power has gone out there...yet we still have no plan "B" to keep the power on perpetually...

Not meaning you mind you...I feel the consumer pays enough to the electric companies that they should guarantee power, 24/7/365. If not that's OK, just scale back what we owe them just a bit....a big bit!

Yeah, there's a very good documentary, "The Crumbling of America" that talks about how our infrastructure is going to hell and one of the things it specifically mentions is the electrical grid. This turned out to be from a branch either pulling down or shorting out a wire, but the recurring problem that's less inconvenient but still really annoying---in some weather, my phone lines pick up transmissions from a local bible-thumping radio station. o_O

Our power went out here about 3 weeks ago, from 6:10PM til 10:30PM. I had plenty of candles and a couple of high-power flashlights, and Caelie and I sat and talked quite a bit, but we do that on a regular basis anyway so we quickly ran out of stuff to say! It was humbling, honestly, to realize just how dependent we are on electricity. We couldn't watch TV, listen to music or even read!
