Miracle of miracles, my lawn is mowed! Yesterday at church during "Joys and Concerns", I gave it up: I got a summons from the county, they were going to fine me if I didn't get it mowed. I needed help, because I don't own a mower, or have money to pay anyone to do the work.

Bless their hearts, H. and her husband and step-son came over this afternoon and mowed and whacked and weeded--there is a giant brush pile out by the road, and I don't think anything bigger than a very stealthy squirrel could hide out back . I gave myself heatstroke trying to keep up with them--I had to go in and sit down with a cold compress cuz I was dizzy--and that was just from picking up some of the junk and yanking a few weeds.

I thanked them profusely when they finished, and H. said that she "never" heard me complain, so if I was asking for help it must be pretty serious. (I do my bitching on-line, where you all can scroll past it or hit the back button---I try not to inflict it on captive audiences!)

As soon as they drove away, I started peeling off clothes, and I'm willing to bet I was in the shower by the time they hit the main drag two blocks away. It was bad enough that I was staggering---I climbed into the shower stall and turned on the cold water, and it wasn't nearly cold enough!---I just stood there for a couple minutes letting my core temperature get back to normal before I reached for the shower puff and soap.

Now I feel clean and not itchy and my yard is mowed. Zen hugs to H. and her family!

Yaaaaaaay for church families! I'm not currently a member of a church, but I do work for one as their secretary, and I've seen all the wonderful things they pitch in and do for their fellow members. :-)

I got force-fed religion as a child--spent nine literally painful years in a parochial school getting my ass beat whenever I failed to conform to expectations...anything from passing notes in class to not knowing what 7x8 equalled could earn punishment. We moved here directly after my 8th grade graduation, and my folks immediately set about looking for a church to join. The one they selected was the same denomination as the school, and I didn't feel any more comfortable there.

My mom died a couple years later; her friends from church were very kind, but by the time my dad passed, nine years later, they'd drifted away, and I was pretty much on my own. I drifted for a long time, then in '99, a friend of my ex- mentioned a discussion group at the local UU church that sounded interesting. I liked the group enough to venture there on a Sunday morning, and haven't looked back since. These are my people!

Force-feeding is *never* a good thing -- tends to backfire, even. I'm SO sorry you had to experience that, but I'm very glad you found a group you could join that have your back. :-)
