I just got back from a munchie run to WalMart. Had to snag a few nibbles for The Wedding...an Event like this demands something a cut above peanut butter and crackers. So I got some veggie cream cheese and a small beef summer sausage and some marked-down Easter goodies. Nomnomnom!

I remember watching Charles and Diana's wedding. It certainly doesn't seem like 30 years ago! I wasn't wild about the wedding dress itself---good grief, you could convert the damned train into a very posh car cover---but the little pink suit she wore when they left for the honeymoon was darling, especially the hat!

I particularly recall a conversation shortly before the day...in the frenzy of coverage, the media reported that Diana had had a gynocological visit. The person I was talking to commented that they (meaning the Royal Family) had to make sure she was still a virgin.

I was quite shocked. In 1981? Really, who cared about such prudery? (I later read a bio of the couple that confirmed that yes indeed, virginity verification was vital!)

I haven't heard any such palaver about today's bride. Is she or isn't she? That's nobody's business but her own! (Although I'm inclined to believe they have. They've lived together and vacationed together and for heaven's sake, it's the 21st century!)

Meanwhile, I'm anxious to see her dress. Since it will undoubtedly influence bridal fashion for the next decade, I'm really hoping for something classy. In fact, if Kate reverses the strapless-crumb-catcher-with-a-corset trend, I'll be overjoyed.

TLC is my channel of choice for coverage. Clinton Kelly is one of the hosts, and I'm sure he'll have some pithy comments about how everyone is dressed. I also look forward to seeing HATS. The Brits DO hats...honestly, if I'm ever over there again, I'm definitely going to invest in a fab bonnet!

TTFN!

About the only reason I can see for virginity verification these days is to be 100% certain that any children born within the first ten months or marriage were fathered by the heir to the throne.

Yeah, it's not like we have to take the bride's word for who the baby daddy is---that's what DNA is for!

I'm going to switch to Arthurian names so this doesn't sound like it's all about William and Kate. They've been living together for months, and I think security would have let William know if she was giving them the slip. :P I did think of a non-virgin-related reason for a pelvic exam for a future Queen. They would want to know if there are any physical condition or infections that might interfere with childbearing.

Back to the fatherhood issue. It's one that applies to any situation (inc fanfic) where lineage is crucial. By the time you have DNA to test, it's too late to avoid a scandal. If Guinevere is a virgin, it eliminates the possiblity of having to admit the King has been cuckolded.

There'a also the pesky problem of what to do with a child of the Queen who is not royal. It's not like the old days, when you would tell the world it was stillborn and ship the kid off to be raised by your old nanny or a poor relation overseas. Nowadays, Gwenevere would most likely want the child at her side.

Arthur could formally adopt the baby and give it the title of Prince(ess), but the child could never inherit the throne (no adopted child can inherit a peerage). The next son or daughter to be born would be in line for the throne. There's no way the poor kid could escape the stigma and notoriety of being the kid who isn't really a prince(ess).

Much better for everyone all around if we know Gwenivere is a virgin.

I thought it was very tasteful and classy...not to my personal taste, because it would make my hips look a mile wide, but that's just me. Lovely tiara, modest bouquet---I'm wondering about her shoes, although I might have nodded off during that bit. I'm too old to pull off 24 hour marathons any more!

I didn't see her shoes, but read this morning that they were hand-made of British materials by the same design house that made her dress.

British women tend to have smaller hips and bigger busts overall than American women, so the dress wouldn't have been flattering to anyone with some booty baggage. :D

SLEEVES being a key word here! So many modern brides opt for the strapless dresses and they are way too big to pull it off. I watched an episode of "Say Yes to the Dress- Plus Size" last night. ICK! One of the young women had to weigh 400 lbs or more- her arms were huge and she stuffed herself into a princess ball gown with no sleeves- it looked hideous. She kept saying she wanted to accentuate her curves- there were no curves, just lots of fat. She looked like a sausage.
I would think they'd have a little more pride- I never entertained the thought of strapless when I got married and I was a whisp of a girl back then. I don't even do sleeveless these days as I am so self-conscious about my arms.
Don't get me started on the brides who have LOTS of upper tattoos and chose their dresses poorly- it just looks trashy to me.

We were talking about her dress at lunch today, and my husband said he hoped it struck a blow for decorum in fashion, since so many young women now have only trashy TV on which to base their ideas of how to dress.

I've never done strapless either. Even back when I was in really good shape, it just wasn't me. And I'm so fair-skinned that the sight of my bare arms would blind onlookers, so that's out too.

Amen to dressing in a modest fashion. My youngest son is dating a young lady who dresses in what most would call a "hippie" fashion- longer skirts, cute peasant blouses, etc. I told him it was so refreshing to see a young lady actually dressing like a lady. She's petite and cute and I love her funky fashions. I am not a prude but it seems that things have really gotten out of hand.
My daughter was able to pull off the strapless/sleeveless wedding gown but she's a size 2 and tiny-
* Giggles on the fair-skinned blinding comment! I am with you- I figure if I don't want to see it in the mirror, I shouldn't object strangers to my bodily shortcomings. :)

It delights me to see young people nicely dressed. My son is a cute kid, but he tips over into downright handsome in a good blazer, dress shirt, pressed slacks, and a tie. :)

The past few years I've had an awful time trying to find nice blouses and dresses to wear to work because everything's cut down to 'there' or up to 'here.' Since I work for a priest, modest dress is a job requirement, and I could frequently find suitable clothes only in thrift shops because current fashion wasn't turning out anything I could wear.

Exactly! They're still on that cruise, only now it's all varying forms of polyester. Yeesh.

I do see some things that are really cute and would fit me great except they're so darned short. (And considering I'm barely five fee tall, that's saying a lot.) Designers need to get it into their heads that not all of us have pencil legs and can get away with wearing a tunic that barely covers our underpants.

I think they're people famous for being famous, if that makes any sense. With the advent of reality TV, there are a lot more folks like that running around.

Corgikid refers to all reality TV as "fertile, fat, filthy and short" since that seems to be the main themes of most of the shows. :-D

"Fit" is a concept that's difficult, especially when you're an uber-plus size. You're so happy just to find something you can get into that how flattering it is is a distant second. Or you go the other way and wear baggy clothes that make you look even bigger. I'm the exception; I'm fussy about my clothes, and I have a large andvaried wardrobe to prove it. (That gal who said she hadn't worn a dress in 20 years? My mind boggled. How DULL. I wear skirts and dresses a lot, but I also wear pants and shorts and I *do* own a pair of jeans. Variety!)

Being a tattoo afficianado myself, I'm only bothered if they're poorly done tattoos. I'm also of the opinion that the ONLY good reason for a backless dress is to show off a particularly spectacular backpiece.

I haven't done skirts or dresses in a couple of years due to the leg damage from the car accident. It's just too beat-up looking. Same reason I don't do shorts unless inside the house.
I tend to wear baggier clothes rather than tight ones- I can't stand things to feel snug. I've lost 10 lbs but still bought size 2X shirts from the thrift store today- I just like to be comfy.
I see a LOT of people that I'd like to ask, "Hon, don't you have a reflectional device at home?" ha ha

They make look at their mirrors, but sometimes they just don't see how it looks. I remember seeing a gal in a knit dress...she looked like a shrink-wrapped bag of potatoes. NOT a good look.

I said to myself, My god, if I was that big, I wouldn't THINK of wearing anything that tight!

And then I stopped, because I WAS/AM that big...and I don't.

What did you think? I loved the dress - very elegant and classy. What'd Clinton Kelly have to say? (I think I was watching NBC.)

The English can do hats but they're not doing them very well recently. I'm not impressed with the fascinator at all - and what were Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie thinking? (The older generations of women still do hats well, though.)

Clinton gave two thumbs up;he had a lot of good things to say about Kate's style and taste. I liked it for her, although it wouldn't suit me.

The hats...OMG, so many hats! I agree completely about E & B's hats, especially that odd sculptural thing of E's. (Clinton said it looked like a skee ball target and he wanted to throw things at it.) Posh Spice Victoria Beckham was wearing an odd little thing that looked like it was going to fall off herface at any moment. (It would've driven me mad. David looked good enough to eat, though.) And good grief, what was with all the random pheasant feathers?!

I watched on BBC America this morning. They've been rerunning the wedding all day, which let me see some of the stuff that I didn't get up early enough to see.

I know the Brits are into crazy hats, but some of the ones I saw were hideous!

I remember hearing a couple of months ago that there would be no virginity check on Kate - probably because she and Will were already living together and had been for awhile.

All in all, it was a beautiful wedding. If you want to see photos of the couple, Westminster Abbey, and the cakes, check out the official flickr photostream of the British monarchy HERE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/britishmonarchy/).

Some of those hats were just dreadful. It's a shame women don't wear hats more often; it seems they either don't know what suits them, or they want to make the most of the opportunity for shock value. Neither is appropriate for and event like this. I have nothing against whimsy, but not at the expense of good taste and dignity.

I do believe that this may be the one royal marriage that will last till death do them part. They look very happy and very much in love.
Her dress was gorgeous and no one that weighs over 125 lbs could have pulled off that waistline. She has very good taste. Cake made me hungry!

Watched ABC stream via Yahoo. No sound - you see, I was at work with my bossette, the infernal last Friday of the month which means closed for students but going over stuff with the bossette.
Nevertheless, she wanted to see the wedding, too, so I pulled up the video stream and prayed that it would work in our work cmputers. It DID!
Two hours of peace and quiet with some rare comments about the hats. Yes, E and B were... *flails* E´s make-up was either running or she was going for a severe gothic look, whicever it was, she looked like a raccoon, honestly.
The dress was gorgeous. Since the quality of the stream was bad, I thought at first that the back WAS indeed corset like (with the all the talk of she losing weight and all) but later I saw the cute buttons in the back.
Oh, and my bossette made a comment that had me smothering laughter. Cameras show Sir Elton John singing, standing side by side with his husband. I say that vow, he is singing with his spouse. My bossette asks, SINCERELY, if that spouse was standing behind Elton (there was some lady with a pale blue hat). I bit my tongue and hummed non-committaly. If she does not know by now who Sir Elton is, who am I to say anything?

Hey, you got to see it AND you got paid for it. Sounds like a pretty good day at work to me! (Don't forget to document that it was her idea!)

E's make-up reminded me of Pru from Blade Runner, like she put it on with an airbrush. What a fright! I liked the blue-green color her sis was wearing, although the dress itself didn't particularly flatter.

LOL about Bossette's naivte. You've mentioned how staunchly anti-gay she is, so why am I not surprised she's oblivious?!

*busts into giggles*

On a serious note, I don't know how often the kids saw him after Diana died (beyond charity events like the Prince's Trust(?) concert and such), but I remember how close he and Diana were. She practically held him together during Versace's funeral. I thought it was lovely for William to have invited him. Sir Elton seemed to be enjoying the moment -- and I think I saw him getting a bit misty-eyed at one point. *wibble*
