Just heard the familiar sonic boom---the shuttle is back.

I'll only hear it one more time---hopefully.

I'm going to miss it, even if it does set off every dog in the neighborhood.

Well, at least the neighborhood will have less nervous dogs... But I miss hearing about the launches (via radio), as well. Damn-damn the cutbacks.

And When I remember that our space race was funded mainly to keep ahead of the Soviets, and now we're dependant on the Russians---I *should* be happy that we're all friends now, but part of me is shaking my head in disbelief.

Just curious -- I've seen the shuttle take off several times (on TV, not in person) but I've never seen it LAND.

How, exactly, does it do that? I mean, in the ocean or at Cape Canaveral or what?

"Splashdown" landings were from the old Apollo days. One of the things that made the shuttle so great was its reuseability. It actually lands on a runway at KSC (Kennedy Space Center) or in California if the weather here is bad. It never had to make a water landing, and I'm not sure it could. I know there are a couple other designated emergency landing sites, but again, we never had to use them.

Thank you for edu-ma-cating me. I started thinking about it and realized I'd never seen the shuttle actually land!
