Still no word about the job, but in headline news, I got my food stamp card, hooray, hooray! So when it stops raining, I shall pop up the road and get something that isn't frozen burritos or ramen. (Which is absurd, considering all the canned goods I've got, but argh, my enthusiasm for canned beans, tomatoes and rice is nil.)

Yes, it's raining! Our drought index has been abyssmal---usually we start getting afternoon showers by the end of May, and this is the first sprinkle we've had all month. We're at the point where we need seven inches of rain just to get nullify the fire danger. Here's hoping that kicks in soon!

Amen. Of course, I have to remind myself that it's ONLY good for food, and won't help with things like light bulbs, paper towels, toothpaste, anything to read, underwear, etc.

Considering what you unearthed from the tabletops (new batteries) and other places, you just might be covered with some of those items when you dig further. Light bulbs may be lurking in some box and tooth paste in another... *goes away to bemoan her own lack of money*

YAY! for getting the card. Man, that was FAST after all that waiting on the phone. *hugs*

We went through a prolonged financially pinched spell after which I could hardly stand to look at canned tomatoes. Yeah, they're thrifty, nutritious, versatile and can dress us all manner of cheap staples, but when you've eaten them twice a day for two years, the charm wears off.

I know, everyone was telling me not to expect it much before the 30 day mark. So I'm enthused---and very glad that I won't be decaffeinating just yet!

I'm so happy they approved you! Hopefully that'll ease the pinch even if only a little bit.

Hope you got lots of yummy things! I am just tickled that they got it to you so fast. If the system worked in an organized fashion, they should contact everyone who is on unemployment (via mail at least) and send the food stamp form so at least folks know it's available to them. Don't you think???

That would make far too much sense! And it would cost money---why would our DEAR* governor approve spending on something that might actually HELP people?!

When I was a kid, our family went through a rough patch . We had food stamps for a while. When we would check out at the A&P, there was a very kind cashier who would let my mother "slip" some things through that food stamps didn't cover. In those days, they were very strict AND there were no cool plastic cards- everyone in line KNEW you had food stamps. I think cookies and the like were taboo so she'd let my mom get stuff for us.
