Pounds gained while house-sitting: 7 (Less than I feared; this is why I do not trust digital scales.)

Pounds of cans recycled so far: 20 (Good for $10 even. This was just what I accumulated at the C's and dug out of my trunk when I cleaned the car. Several more bags are awaiting egress at home.)

Looming crises: Too numerous to list. Assorted bills coming due, threats from the county about my yard, and what the hell possessed me to offer to bring hospitality for church this Sunday?!?!

"Ain't that just the cherry on the turd?" award goes to: The digital converter box, which picks up ONE channel (CBS)---when the weather is good. Raining pitchforks, not so good.

After three months, more or less, in relatively "normal" surroundings, I'd forgotten what an unholy mess I live in. Am in the mood to Throw Out All the Things---IF I had a shitload of trashbags and a clue where to start. It's times like this when I really miss GK---an hour of her whip-cracking and there was Serious Progress.

Thankfully, there are signs of autumn: It's still warm, but it's about three degrees away from being outright hot. They're predicting overnight lows in the 60s for this weekend, which makes me so happy, if I had a tail I would wag it. It reminds me that even horrible things eventually change for the better, if you just keep going.

*hugs* What do you have in the pantry that's suitable for hospitality -- baked beans, pasta salad, deviled eggs, maybe?

Tons of beans, pasta and corn, and a couple of cake mixes. I just need to get my act together. No deviled eggs, though. I need to make the eggs I do have, last.

This recipe looks good:

Zesty Southern Pasta and Bean Salad.

If you have canned pineapple and brown sugar in the house, it's easy to make a Pineapple Upside Down Cake.

I am going to get rid of my bottle-ware via recycling, too. As soon as I can.

The anger to throw things out... concentrate on a tiny little sliver and dig it through. And come on, usual plastic bags can be reused as trash bags! I do that ALL the time (unless there is a LAW against doing it in your neighbourhood?)

True. I have been donating my old grocery bags to the food pantry,, but charity begins at home.

Exactly! And what I read from the comments below, you can ask the cashier for extra FREE grocery bags?
Not so easy here: all the bags, even the plastic monstrosities, cost the buyer if they have not brought their own. ;)

I have been accumulating the good reusable kind, the trick is to remember to take them along. It does no good when I unpack the groceries and leave the bag sitting on the table instead of putting it out in my car or at least hanging it on the door.

Yes, there is that. What you CAN do, is to fold one of more durable plastic bags, and put it into your handbag... One in each of the bags. They fold to very small shapes, and so you will have your own bag, even if you forget the more durable reusable one behind....

Most of thetime, I carry a little wallet on a wrist strap, it's a glorified vinyl envelope. When I do take a bag, it's a tote I got for Xmas, and yes, it would have room for a folded bag or two....

Yank some of those cans out of the pantry- corn, beans, etc and make a big old cold salad. Protein without hurting the pocket book! Hospitality doesn't need to be a sit-down dinner.

Yeah, bean-corn salad is what it's looking like. Maybe a corn pudding on the side.

YAYZ for cooler weather!
OH NOES for wonky converter box. *glares at offending object*

YAYZ also for coming in under your expected weight gain. In my book that counts as a win, so give yourself a pat on the back! *high fives*

AND for wanting to dig in & weed out. \o/
Based on my own experience, I'd say don't wait -- strike while the iron is hot. Grab any old sack, box, or whatever and start tossing the obvious: stuff that is worn out, expired, or clearly trash.

If you're pinching pennies, here's some ideas for trash "bags" that I've used before. The key is recylcing trash to hold trash.

- Use empty, stale, or expired boxes & bags of cereal, bread, detergent, etc. can hold a handfull of small items or junk mail.
- Threadbare sheets: Spread it out on the floor & pile stuff in the middle. Tie opposite corners together to make a giant "hobo bundle."
- Old clothes can be whip-stiched closed at the neck or waistband.
- When you go grocery shopping ask for extra bags. Around here, most cashiers around here will stick in anywhere from two to six bags.
- Ask your friends to save grocery bags for you. Recycling is a good thing.

You're right, of course. Sometimes my middle-class suburban upbringing really shows!

One of my biggest problems is wanting things to be "just right" before I start a project, and wanting it to come out looking like a professional had done it.

I know intellectually that it's a warped interpretation of the saying "If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well." My brain somehow twisted that into, "If I can't do it 'right', why bother doing it all?" I have to keep reminding myself that sometimes "good enough" will do.

Uh-huh. My picky, neurotic Virgo tendencies tend to gang up on me. I look around at all the chaos and whimper. I have this vision of what it should look like, and it's so far from reality it hurts.

Make a pile of the stuff that can bring in some cash and post on our local Craig's List. That way, there's no shipping involved- just customers picking up what they want to buy and you driving off with the cash. I meet them at a public place (never your home) and make the exchange.
Take pics with your digital camera and post at J's house. Couldn't be easier! They reply by email (via Craig's list posting ID ) so no one knows your identity.
We sold a table and chairs 2 weeks ago- guy drove from W Melbourne to get it. It's easier than Ebay and no fees involved. Just a suggestion! People are starting to look for holiday stuff and Christmas gifts.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] ang5fam - you could probably make a killing on CraigsList.

When I was moving out of the marital home, I sold my washer/dryer and refrigerator/stove in less than 2 days. Then after I settled into the duplex, I sold some of the jewelry Asshat had gotten me over the years. Everything got snapped up immediately.

And it's not just high-dollar items that sell. People buy craft supplies, seasonal decorations, old furniture - everything!

I' ve also got LOTS of plus-size clothing and assorted breakable items that I'm chary of shipping. There's not a lot of high-dollar stuff, but enough nickel and dime stuff adds up.

I've been getting rid of / selling things that I never thought I would. I know you have mentioned Fiestaware and the like---keep a piece or two and then sell, sell, sell!!!
I have a crazy assortment of stuff on Ebay and Craig's List and Etsy but people buy strange things.
