I got a batch of job-related e-mails from GK last night, and sent a query to an agency who called me at 8 this morning. Agency as in temp agency, but NOT the ones who've been jerking my chain for the last couple of weeks. I had an appointment there at 2 this afternoon, filled in a metric butt-load of paperwork, and may actually have something lined up starting next Tuesday. (It's not quite carved in stone yet, but it's a strong possibility.)
There are other things I'm investigating, although anything else had better develop DAMN FAST...I can't afford NOT to take it, even though
A) It's telemarketing. I suck at sales. Give me inbound calls, and I'll wow 'em, but my (brief, long ago) experience with phone sales was not a happy time.
B) It's second shift. Good, in that it gives me days to find something better while making an income, bad in that next Tuesday night, which is when it starts, is the season premiere of House.
C) Uh...those are the main reasons, really. But the House-conflict makes me want to rip out handfuls of hair and wail. It's always something~-!
I'll take it if I have to, because I have to. If that's what it takes to pay my dues with the agency, I'll do it for a few weeks, but long-term--sweet fuck, no! Either I'll find a better job during the day, or they'll offer me something else that I'm better suited to. The gal working the orientation was twenty-something and perky, and she assured me that I would be on the list for clerical-type jobs, that I'm very well qualified.
That may have had something to do with the fact that on the line where it asked for duration of keyboarding/typing experience, I put 30+ years. Which is true: back in junior high (circa 1973), twice a week, they separated the girls from the boys--the boys spent an hour playing basketball, the girls got typing classes. At the time, my budding feminist soul was outraged--typing?! How stereotypical! Now, of course, I'm rather smug, knowing full well that I've earned more money with the ability to type than any of those clowns ever made playing basketball.
Being able to "touch-type" has come in awfully handy as a writer--and to be perfectly honest, I'm *not* an amazingly fast typist; I'm most accurate in the 40-45 wpm range. I remember being queasy with nerves when I took the typing test when I applied for the directory assistance job--I didn't find out until later that their minimum requirement was 20 wpm, which I can do with zero effort.
However, I *can* talk on the phone and type at the same time, and have done so in numerous settings. Answering service, directory assistance, floral orders, and the billing office...to name a few. They all required the ability to transcribe notes or pull up info while simultaneously carrying on a conversation. My ex- used to dictate things he wanted me to input for him, and it freaked him out to no end that I'd be looking him right in the eye while he talked, my fingers moving across the keys at a good clip, words magically appearing on the screen without me having to peek at my hands. (I was amused: how many thousands of hours have I spent doing that?!)
Anyway, I'll know tomorrow what's going on, but it looks like I'll have myself a job. And hopefully, since Fox has whole episodes of "Prison Break" on-line for viewing, that they'll do the same with House....
