Tomorrow is certainly shaping up to be lively. L. from church has found a secondhand refrigerator to replace my non-freezing wonder (fridge doesn't work, freezer only keeps things cold, not frozen---and freezes up along the back wall). She's recruited friends with a truck to help---they're going to bring it here tomorrow afternoon, so I'm alternately clearing a path and monitoring logisitical e-mails.

No more skinned knuckles from manual defrost, yay! The ability to buy in bulk and freeze for future famines--double yay! (That alone makes me weep with joy. Really! If I could've stocked up back when I had money, things would've been a lot less tense the last couple of months....) Ice cubes! Ice cream! Hell, popsicle sticks! *thinks dreamily of home-made smoothies*

Out of the blue today, Reenie gave me a new tarot deck. I'm not sure if it was intended as an early birthday gift, or what, but it's rather interesting: LiberT: Tarot of the Stars Eternal, by Lo Scarabeo, and it's wild--kind of Egyptian-Art-Deco-by-Dali---definitely not the classic Rider-Waite that I'm used to. (http://www.llewellyn.com/bookstore/book.php?pn=J565) This brings my total number of decks up to three---I've got Robin Wood's deck, which was my starter (I've loved her work ever since "The People of Pern"), the classic Rider-Waite, which RW's is based on, and now this one, which is very trippy and I think it'll require more intuitive interpretation.

I got a chance to chat with D. and her husband R. about some of the work I need done on the house before it can be painted. They will barter for labor: presuming I have anything they want, I just have to acquire the materials to do the work with. I need the soffits in the back replaced, I need that former A/C vent removed and the hole blocked, and I really need the jasmine pruned and a new gutter/downspout over the front porch. (And that's just outside.) I know, with everything else that's been going on, that must sound like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but I sure as hell can't afford a whole new roof, so I need to get this taken care of by the end of the year---that way, I can get the painting done during the dry season. And since they aren't at church every week, and this is the first time I've seen them since the lawn got mowed....

So far, I've got the dining room table slid over into the corner, have picked up a bag's worth of crap and need to roll up the d.r. rug--which may as well stay rolled up; sadly, it's way past its retro prime. Also shift the free-standing pantry and get all the stuff off the top of the fridge and remove the magnets and such. And make sure there's sufficient clearance for a massive object to maneuver in a straight line from the front door to the d.r. and the kitchen. I have my work cut out for me....

Okay, back to work!

I found it while exploring Barnes and Noble one fine day in early September a few years ago. And I recognized the name from "People of Pern", which I loved--great artwork!--and decided it would make a lovely birthday present to myself that year. (That was '97 or '98, to the best of my recollection.) I don't read it as much as the Rider-Waite deck I ran across a few years ago, because it's getting "sticky"--not sure if it's because the cards are getting old or if it's an energy thing.... I still love the artwork, though!

I found it in Borders some time in the mid-90s, while browsing with my then-boyfriend. I didn't know the artist, but there are so MANY Tarot decks and this one really spoke to me as being "right." (Rider-Waite is right, too, but in a traditional way, IMO) I admired it a lot, and to my surprise, my boyfriend actually seemed interested. He inspected the deck, and declared he really liked the version of the Magician on the front. Since he was not into that kind of thing, when he bought the deck, I hoped it was for me.

It wasn't. Since it turned out he was maintaining two full time girlfriends at once, unbeknownst to either of us, I've always guessed that that deck went to the other one.

But I never forgot that great deck, and, when it never came to me, I went and bought it myself.
