I can't believe this...last night, while I was nominating Flight of the Phoenix for Yuletide (since I think it would be cool to get, and as far as writing it goes, I have an actual idea or two lurking around), I had to check something out at IMDb. And as I was scanning the credits, something leaped out at me and caused a serious *headdesk* reaction. I mean, HOW MANY times have I seen that movie? I'd guess five, at least. And all within the last six months. So why is it that I didn't realize that the dumb schlub who got lost in the desert at night (about twenty minutes into the film) was Jared Padlecki? Or, to frame that better, why didn't I recognize Sam Winchester as the dumb schlub? *headesk, headdesk, headdesk* Too busy concentrating on Hugh Laurie, I guess...the curse of the one-track mind strikes again.

Oh man, I was misty-eyed in the first five minutes. That scene with Sam giving his mother John's dog tags---OMG, just rip my heart out, why don't you?!

If zombie-chica withers plants whereever she goes, why was it in a perfect circle around her grave? And why wasn't there a trail of dead vegetation leading away?

Grief counselors? Priceless. Especially the "We've come to hug you!" line when they've broken into Necro-boy's house.

Porn? Sammy, Sammy, Sammy...you just made all the fangirls in America turn into goo. (Good boy!)

The How to Kill a Zombie quandary: Gee, boys---since it was a Greek ritual, why don't you see what they have to say?

Cheating Bitch Best Friend: You should've let the stupid bitch die, guys. Anybody who has *ever* seen a horror movie knows that when you think you've killed the undead monster you don't just lay there staring at it, because its eyes WILL open and it WILL come after you. And if you're that dumb---out of the gene pool!

What I would've said to Dean when he finally unburdened himself of all the emo:
Your Dad was an adult, and if things went down the way you think they did, then the outcome was the result of his own rational decision. Do you honestly think you could have changed his mind? He loved you very much, and guilt-tripping yourself is not what he would have wanted. He gave you a second chance, and you have years, decades ahead of you to prove that his sacrifice wasn't a mistake.

Grief is normal. Pain is normal. So is being angry and depressed and off your game. Loss of a loved one hurts like a son-of-a-bitch. Time helps, if you're honest, and don't try to pretend everything is okay. You're getting past that stage, and that's good. Yes, there's still a big void in your life, but you still have your life, and your brother. Use the time John gave you, take care of your brother, and honor who your father was and what he lived for.

Enough said.

The guy who wanders off to take a pee and winds up a scoured corpse in the sand is Sam? I may have to rent FotP again just to catch that!

I'm averting my eyes from everything else because I've not yet watched the tape of the Supernatural ep.

That's him! My jaw nearly unhinged. And came the thought, "Well, that gives me an interesting link the next time I play the Kevin Bacon game." (Which, incidentally, I was playing years before anyone ever heard of Kevin Bacon---like, high school in the 70's, only I called it "Spiderweb".)

Come back when you've seen this ep and we can schmooze!

I went, I viewed, I'm back! Without a doubt, Dean gets the best lines: "It's your grief counselors, here for a hug," "Haven't you ever seen Pet Semetary?" and "She runs fast for a dead girl."

Sam watching porn was so funny! "Awkward" -- heehee! Sam broke my heart burying John's dogtags, but Dean just tore it in half with his confession to Sam at the end. Dean should never, ever cry -- the world will fall off its axis.

Who was playing Angela's dad? He looked very familiar in a sort of Alan Arkin/Mandy Patinkin-esque way.

I'm glad they're really exploring the effects of John's death. I remember when Buffy's mother died, it was like, "Bummer...let's go kill the monster of the week!".

I only started watching with the season premiere, so I'm still getting a feel for the characters...my take on it is, Dean has John's stubborn streak, all that "suck it up and keep going" attitude, while Sam is more open to new ideas and experiences, more adaptable. (I've GOT to get this job! I *need* Season One DVDs!)

I didn't notice any familiar names in the credits, so I have no clue who the dad was. All I can say is, she must've taken after her mother....

I started watching it in re-runs this summer and was instantly hooked. (Fanfiction got me interested -- one day I read a story titled, "Death's Other Kingdom" and was intrigued.)

Dean not only seems to take after his dad, but he's lived a rather insular life: going on hunts, killing monsters and demons, and extreme violence have been part of his life ever since he was small. Because Sam was younger (I think he's supposed to be about six years younger than Dean), they seem to have shielded him from some of that, and he did get away to college, so he's had a different set of influences. Also, he's clearly set up to be the child most like their dead mother.

John, in sacrificing his life to save Dean's, showed the viewers something Dean probably didn't get to see much of in his dad -- the depths of his heart. So I'm also glad they're exploring it and haven't turned Dean into something truly evil, like last week's vampire hunter.

I thought it was four years, but that's still a pretty wide age gap until you hit your twenties or so. I also have a feeling that, consciously or not, John on some level regards/regarded Sam as "Mary's baby", so I suspect he was somewhat more protective of him than he was of Dean, and probably for a longer time.

Since Dean was old enough to understand most of what was going on at the time, I think John had to deal with explaining a lot of difficult subjects to him. Dean got a crash course in unwelcome reality at an age when most kids are still wibbling about the monster in the closet.

Sam got his knowledge in bits and pieces and I understand that kids consider whatever circumstances they grow up with to be normal. He's always known there's weird shit out there, unlike Dean, who had a so-called normal life during his first few years. It's interesting that it's Sam who wants to experience white-bread normal; I'd think that it would be the other way around, but like I said, my exposure to the charecters consists of four episodes, and a bunch of fics and vids.
