Since I've had a couple people ask what I need with regard to upgrading my 'puter for work, here are the parameters I was given---

Must have:

Window XP SP2 -- Have it, no upgrade required, all is well

MS Office 2000/2003 -- Have a line on it, should be a-okay

512 MB DDR/DDRW, NOT SDR -- I have no idea. Looked around in 'Properties' and am none the wiser

40 GB hard drive -- No. It's 37 GB, only about 26 GB available

As it stands, it considers itself an Intell pentium III processor, with 489 MHz and 640 MB of RAM. It's in a Dell case the size of a pair of cinderblocks, and was Frankensteined for me about two years ago. I've been drooling over refurbished laptops, but not holding my breath. (And what the hell is the difference between a laptop and a notebook, anyway?)

Any questions? I'll do my quasi-technical best to answer.

Corgiguy orders a lot of components from this company, so I looked here for the DDR:

Same company -- a link for hard drives:

It appears that you might be able to do the upgrades for not much. Usually the catch is getting the stuff to fit in the old computer case. Corgiguy once had to custom-order the rails that hold the drive in place for an old computer. You could ask your techie friend to look at it.

That's the same company AI pointed me toward! I take that as a good sign.

Laptops and notebooks are, essentially, the same thing. Notebooks tend to be a bit more 'streamlined'.

How about a 250GB external hard drive for $75? ::grin:: (3rd one down)

Always a good place to start your shopping for tech goodies.

Yeah, sounds like you mainly need an external hard drive. Have you got a USB port free?

I had to think about it, but yes, as long as I don't plug in my MP3 player.
