Precious metals

Yesterday being the last day of the month (and a full week til payday!) I was stressed about paying my insurance---car and homeowners---because in the first case, it's Florida AND it's hurricane season, and most insurance companies will look for excuses to drop your coverage, and in the case of auto, I've got a helluva commute, I don't dare let that lapse, either.
A long, long time ago, say 5-6 years, H.W.S.N.B.N. picked up two BIG sheets of copper with the stated intent of making me a pair of end tables...which never happened. Fast forward to Wednesday, when I found out from BC that the current price for copper hereabouts is $2.90 per pound. I lugged them in and weighed them on my doctor's office quality balance scale, and wahoo, 41 pounds!
Took them up to the recycler and got enough to cover both payments when added to what I already had in the bank. (I have about $3 left in my account, but my gas tank is at 3/4 full, I have a well-stocked pantry, and the status is fairly quo.)
And now, it's off to work I go---!

Date: 2008-08-01 05:32 pm (UTC)There's a metals recycling place on the highway between here and the next town, and every Saturday morning there's a line of trucks on the shoulder of the road that stretches for a couple of miles with people selling scrap metal. It's no longer cheap to buy the stuff from overseas, so that market's taken off.
This was a bad money month: very long and the paydays hit on the wrong side of both ends of it. Thank goodness we got paid last night because I was starting to run out of kitchen ingenuity.
