This morning, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. I did it three years ago, but the last couple of years, I was just NOT up for it. Missed the sign-up deadline last year, and the year before I'd just started my job and was going in six different directions without taking on anything else.

I didn't volunteer for anything I didn't think I could nail. In the case of movies, they were things that I own on DVD or VHS and could watch to renew my memory, or books, ditto. More books than movies, actually.
_________________

What I requested, in case my Yuletide Santa drops by for hints:

Fandom 1: Devour I'd like to see Jake clear his name (or try to---at least get him out of jail!), with the help of Ivan Reisz. (Because William Sadler was woefully underused in that role.) And for all the SPN devotees who've signed up, I could totally see Reisz becoming a hunter after Anne's "death". Kudos if there's father-son bonding, NON-smut.

Fandom 2: Equilibrium There are so many pretty men in this fandom, and I've lusted after Sean Bean forfreakingever. Could we NOT kill off Errol in this version? Maybe have him working behind the scenes with the Underground/Jurgen? Slash or not, as you like (I think getting John laid without Prozium would help his disposition enormously).

Fandom 3: Marion Zimmer Bradley - The Catch Trap I love this book for a lot of things: the circus background, the big Italian family with a wealth of wonderfully realized, complex characters, the mid-century ambiance...plus a couple of hot guys sexing each other. Hurt-comfort, please, and some detailed slash. Maybe after the end of the book, a look at the new dynamic between Tom and Matt? Or, if you're not a slasher, something that looks at one or more of those other elements.

Fandom 4: Anne McCaffrey - Dragonriders of Pern There's such a big gap between "Dragonsinger" and "Dragondrums". I'd love to see more of Menolly gaining confidence as a journeyman, maybe visiting Half-Circle Sea Hold for a festival or wedding and surprising her parents with her new status. Or filling in temporarily for Elgion---how would she react if they tried to push her around and give her non-Harper duties? In the Harper Hall books, I like Robinton, Sebell, Piemur (and Mirrim, but they only let you pick four), but in supporting parts. I really want something Menolly-centric.
_______________

As you can see, it's half slash and half gen/could-be-het. And heaven only knows what I'll end up writing, but I'm having fun looking at my list of offerings and thinking about what I might do in the event I get a particular fandom or pairing.

Let the games begin!

Quite a few! F'listers and other names I recognize from various comms---unlike my first time, which was about two weeks after I got an LJ, to do Yuletide, because someone I knew from FF.net talked me into it. (And I'm so glad she did!)

Picking four requests was tough, but I remember how happy I was with the story I got last time. I just hope I can do my assignment justice! (Whatever it may be....)

Somehow I've had Marion Zimmer Bradley confused with a Christian author with a similar three-part name, which from the book description was giving me a truly serious WTF? moment. :D

I think this one's first name was also Marion. Some of her books are in the fiction section of the library at St. P's -- never read them, just noticed them.

It was a pretty funny moment when I realized I was wrong! :D

I've thought so ever since the first time I saw Patriot Games---in the theater, when it was first released. Rrrow!

LotR was not my thing---I went because my ex was into it. Was delighted to see Sean in it, but lost much enthusiasm after Boromir was killed off.

Have caught a few of the Sharpe series here and there, also quite tasty, I agree.

I started a DeVour/SPN cross over the summer. It was going to have Sam pose as Jake's lawyer to get him out of jail and Dean was going to be paroled from Hell and wind up the villain. Alas, my muse wandered off and this is the equivalent of a milk carton---somebody write it, please!

Uh oh, that sounds kinda complicated to pull off. Should probably finish my first Spnfic first... I didn't post it yet. It's gen and a crossover with Creeper. Anyway I seem to tend to start a bunch load off stuff and then I get stuck and the fic slumbers on my harddrive... :)

Oh God! I know that feeling!
Sometimes I wish I wouldn't be so damn slow. I manage about 3000 to 5000 words a week right now. At first it doesn't sound too bad, but per day it isn't that much. Maybe it might have sth to do with not having the time or the muse to write everyday...

It's only now that I finished my studies I have such a word count. (So this is about the last 1,5 or 2 months). I don't even believe I can keep this up. The thing is there are so many ideas I'd really really like to explore, but it would take years to do that in this tempo. Hmmm, perhaps I'll gonna have to kick some of them into the bin, coz writing is a hobby and shouldn't stress me out. That would be totally against my intentions when I started it.

Sorry I didn't response any more yesterday, but here it was so very late at night, so I needed to go to sleep.

OH! I would love to see Menolly go back to Half-Circle and have Yanus and Mavi have to swallow all their previous bull. Not just because Menolly is now a HARPER, but one of the most famous harpers on Pern and Master Harper Robinton's special pupil! And that she impressed 9 Fire Lizards. That'd show 'em!

Why yes, I do have a vindictive streak.

Menolly's sister Sella is a bit of a social climber. So what if Menolly came back for her wedding---to Benis, that son of Lord Groghe's who got fostered there. For political reasons, Yanus might make Benis his heir instead of Alemi, who we know from the later books has emigrated to the Southern Continent, which is never gone into in detail---that could certainly be part of it, because "Dragonsong" showed him as sympathetic to Menolly. Menolly has a boat of her own, as shown in "Dragondrums"---how did she come by it? Those are the kind of dangling plotlines it would be neat to interweave. (Me?! Christo, I have about six unfinished SPN stories languishing on my harddrive, I'm not planning to take it on!)

I would loooove to imagine the looks on all their faces! And there were a LOT of dangling plots. I sort of got out of the books after Robinton died....

I introduced someone to Nancy McGill the other day, and read the stories again myself.... Would another Nancy story be in there along with the rest? By chance? *poke?*

*grins sheepishly* Yeah, that would be "Known and Unknown", which is Nancy acting on the plan she was formulating in "Seen and Unseen", and what happens after that. It pretty much goes AU midway through Season Two. I know a LOT that hasn't seen print....

I'm thrilled to be pimped; and truth be told, I'm impressed by your memory. After all, that's almost two years old, and I can barely remember things I read last week. Thanks!

I love Nancy. I love John and Nancy. And springing John from hell filled me with great squee.

There is so much bad John fic, it's very nice to read GOOD John fic....and "good John" fic...if you get my drift....

Quality of writing AND quality of characterization, if I'm interpreting that correctly.

Yes, "Known and Unknown" would spring John from Hell, although not without consequences. And when Dean catches up to Nancy, he's gonna be pissed, and he's not going to believe that's his dad....

Other plots in the works:

"Nature vs. Nurture" -- Dean and Sam are raised separately after the fire and don't meet again until they're teenagers. Evil me, John dies in the fire and Mary survives.

"Gone Hunting" -- Yeah, lame title. It's a DeVour crossover where Sam poses as Jake's lawyer to get him out of jail and Dean was going to be paroled from Hell and wind up the villain.

"Brotherly Love" -- I noticed all the similarities between Simon & Simon and the brothers Winchester. And I had a Wee!chesters crossover in the works where AJ gave Sam the idea for his future profession, and Rick imbued Dean with a more free-spirited philosophy. Yeah, crack.

"Upon a Midnight" -- A Christmas story that I started last Christmas. Is it going to be finished this Christmas? Ha! If it is, it's gonna be AU, cuz it's already Kripke'd.

"An Angel Walks Into a Bar" -- was going to have Castiel enlist an ally to help Dean save Sam, but it never quite jelled. Neither did another Trickster story, or a follow-up to "Peace in the Valley". Or one that's about to be Kripke'd, about a mental patient Sam was going to liberate during the time he was hunting alone.

Quality of writing AND quality of characterization, if I'm interpreting that correctly. Yes, exactly.

Hey, if you can spring John and keep Nancy from biting the bullet, I'd be a VERY happy camper. I know it would be too much to ask for John and Nancy alive and happy and ridinig off into the sunset in John's truck.... but until you post otherwise, I can still hope, damnit!

Have you posted some of Nature vs Nurture? That sounds so familiar to me....

I'm not your writer, but I think it's nifty that someone else has had the "Menolly goes back to Half-Circle" story idea. I actually wrote that when I was fourteen, before I had any idea I was writing fanfiction. I went back and looked at it, and yea, the prose is pretty overwrought, but for a fourteen-year-old, it didn't suck ;)

I got into the Harper Hall books before reading any of the Dragonrider epics, so I have a special fondness for those characters. I've probably read "Dragonsinger" as many times as the rest of the series put together.

My first fan-fiction? Star Trek TOS before it went into syndication. (I was, like, seven...yeah, I know, that dates me.) And no, I wasn't slashing Kirk and Spock, I had no idea things like that even happened. Of course, this was back in the Pleistocene era, when closets were still the thing--!
