vanillafluffy: (Yay ME!)

Welcome to Vanillafluffy's First Annual (maybe) Cheer-Up-athon!

Scanning my f'list, it seems like most of us are going through some kind of agita and/or angst. Families, relationships, jobs or lackthereof---it's always something.

As a wise man once said, "I get by with a little help from my friends." I'm inviting my friends (and their friends, and anyone with something constructive to contribute) to particate in this Cheer-Up-athon.

I'm not asking for money, just good mojo. (As long as it isn't that whole "Well, it could be worse, you could be sleeping in a box" schtick, because really, that doesn't work.)

Let's have your compliments, well-wishes, inspirational quotes, suggestions of activities to brighten someone's day---preferably low-or-no-cost, since times ARE tough. Also welcome are Gifs, icons, picspams and fanvids, macros, happy ending comment fics, recipes for your favorite comfort food and good news in general.

This is going to be an on-going event. After a few days as is, I'll change the date so that this post stays at the top of my page and you can keep adding to it. Post as often as you like, and feel free to pimp.

Keep it positive and upbeat, be kind to each other and play nice, y'all.

Good one, Joker! Bugs is a classic, so are Looney Tunes in general.

Jansson'sTemptation

Jansson's Temptation is a dish I picked up from a chef called Tom Vernon who had a TV prog in the UK years ago called Fat Man In the Kitchen.

Ingredients:

8-10 baking potatoes cut into chips (2ins long and 1/4 ins thick)
1 large spanish onion sliced
20 anchovy fillets drained and cut into half inch lengths
3oz butter
1/2 pint of single or double cream
2ox breadcrumbs

Preheat oven to 200 degrees C (400 F), Butter a pie dish. Alternate layers of onions, anchovies, dabs of butter, potatoes ending with a layer of potatoes. Pout juice from anchovy tins and half the cream ovr the top. Top off with toasted breadcrumbs are more dabs of butter.

Cook for 35 mins, add the rest of the cream and cook for 10 ore minutes.

Eat.

Reheat leftovers the next day for something which is as close to breakfast (lunch or dinner) of the gods as you can get.

YUM!

So fabulous! All done in one continuous take, which I find absolutely mind-boggling. (Hopping back and forth over the rails would've done me in!) Wonder how many weeks they rehearsed and how make takes it took?

And I adore that dress Ginger is wearing. Very simple, but with such wonderful movement!

"Backwards and in high heels"... I have such a crush on Ginger right now.

But my go-to video for a dreary day is always the Antwerp train station: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EYAUazLI9k

At University I listened to the cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me Album so often, and it is a pretty depressing album, not really happy songs, but I think Mr. Smith is a genius in a way, b/c the last song, while maybe not lyrically the best on the Album, always pulled me out of any funk..

Fight by the cure

Sometimes there's nothing to feel
Sometimes there's nothing to hold
Sometimes there's no time to run away
Sometimes you just feel so old
The times it hurts when you cry
The times it hurts just to breathe
And then it all seems like there's no-one left
And all you want is to sleep

Fight fight fight
Just push it away
Fight fight fight
Just push until it breaks
Fight fight fight
Don't cry at the pain
Fight fight fight
Or watch yourself burn again
Fight fight fight
Don't howl like a dog
Fight fight
Just fill up the sky
Fight fight fight
Fight til you drop
Fight fight fight
And never never
Never stop

Fight fight fight
Fight fight fight

So when the hurting starts
And when the nightmares begin
Remember you can fill up the sky
You don't have to give in
You don't have to give in

Never give in
Never give in
Never give in

You might embed OK if you there's an option for "Use old embed code" on YT after you click the button for Embed - that's what I had to do. Not sure what the 'new' embed does that the old one doesn't :)

That whole early 30's/Warner Brothers/Busby Berkely/pre-code period was awesome.

What still cracks me up, is chirpy, nice-guy, Dick Powell, when we know that hard-boiled, tough-guy Dick Powell was lurking there all along. BUT considering that Warners already had Raft, Bogart, Robinson AND Cagney, it's just as well that Dick was able to tap dance his way through the 30's. (Of course Cagney was able to do both in the same era, but he still made his mark as the tough guy.)

And I pimped this post in my own LJ (http://tourmaline1973.livejournal.com/309819.html). Cos we all need some happy fun times now.

Was going to share a Tom & Jerry favourite, but I think I'll create a post at my own LJ instead, so that this page doesn't take 100000 hours to load & then crashes :)

Edit: The post is here (http://tourmaline1973.livejournal.com/310102.html), and I've also created a Cheer-up-athon tag in case the urge to be happy & cheerful takes hold :)

Sesame Street clips on YouTube are pretty much guaranteed to raise my mood.

Walking my dog for fun (as opposed to walking him to get from A to B) is also good. If you don't have a dog, you could always borrow one from a neighbour- and yes, you do have to give the dog back! Or you could try volunteering as a dog walker at a local animal shelter. I'm not sure how it works elsewhere in the world, but over here in Merrie Olde Englande, places like Dogs Trust and the RSPCA are normally only too happy to have extra dog walkers.

Always lovely to meet another friend of Kgal's!

Walking is a good idea whether I'm with a dog or not; I need to get out more.

Thanks for stopping by, come back any time!
