An hour ago, I crawled out of bed, pulled on the nearest clothing to hand and went to exercise my Right to Vote.

The line at the Moose Lodge was longer than I've EVER seen it, and I've been voting from that precinct since 1978. It was nearly to the far end of the building when I got there, and the length stayed constant---it was just as long when I left. A poll worker I spoke to said it had been busy from the time they opened at 7.

Another first: Running into someone I knew in the line. NJ, BC's wife, was there, about a dozen people ahead of me. She said BC had done early voting, and we both agreed that that might well be the only time in his life he's ever been early for anything.

Anyway, I've done my civic duty, and now I get to bite my nails for the next 18 hours like everyone else. I hope they vote, too. I hope nothing goes wrong. I hope Obama wins.

I find myself wondering how many people who have been eligible to vote are voting for the first time today? I don't just mean the youngsters who came of age within the last four years; I'm thinking of people like a former co-worker (30-ish at the time), who said she was "too young" to be interested in politics. How many people who've never bothered before are going to get out and vote today?

I'm gonna crawl back into bed for a couple more hours of sleep now....
